Hello,
I was gifted a HP ENVY 7640 printer for Christmas this year, and when I try to print or scan something the connection is lost. My default printer is the HP ENVY and the printer knows the name of my computer but when it tries to preform a task it comes back as an error saying that the connection was lost. I also tried to use the print and scan doctor but that didn't do much but tell me that the network wasn't connected. I have it linked up by USB connection. I do know that the printer is able to print because I have printed from the HP printables before. I am confused seeking answers. Please let me know how I can fix this.

Belle,
You might decide that you can connect the printer to the network; network connection does provide access to the full range of features available in the printer software.
The printer supports both Ethernet and Wireless, even Wireless Direct.
Specifications > Connectivitiy
OK -- regardless, you can try reinstalling the Full Feature Software for your printer.
- Make sure you have disconnected the USB cable before you install the printer software.
- The software must be installed and then the cable is connected only when instructed and only if the USB connection is desired.
Printer:
HP ENVY 7640 e-All-in-One Printer
Full Feature Software:
File name: EN7640_117.exe
Release details
Released: Nov 23, 2015
Version 34.2
I recommend that even if you decide not to install this software, that you download it and save it somewhere it will be included in your backups.

Thank you dragon for this information. I set up the wireless connection and everything tells me that it is on and ready but the printer will still not print. I open up the printer page in the control panel and I looked to see if the task shows up and nothing is added to that folder when I select print. Everything looks like it is connected, the blue wifi signal is strong and the wireless reports shows that everything is enabled and ready. I do not understand why my printer will not print when connected by wireless or USB.

I would like to understand exactly what you are doing:
What program are you using to print?
For example:
- That is, are you trying to print a Word Document from within Word?
- Are you trying to print from your Web Browser - say from Internet Explorer?
- Are you trying to "scan a document or photo" in the Printer Assistant shortcut icon on your Desktop?
- Are you trying to print from Windows Photo Viewer or from Paint?

I have tried to print from several places. I have tried Microsoft word, and through the internet using mozilla firefox. I also tried to scan something from the printer to see if it would show up to the computer and it told me that the connection got lost. I use windows vista and as for the IP address of the printer I am pretty sure it is set up, it is on the HP Network Configuration page. In the print queue there is absolutely nothing in that folder. What am I doing wrong?

Full Feature Software
Did you remove and then reinstall the Full Feature Software?
(See my first Post in this Thread)
If not, when you do remove > install the Full Feature Software, you might consider using / assigning the Static IP Address along with the information for your DNS server.
If you have already completed the reinstallation of the printer program, then you can adjust / assign the Static IP Address using the EWS connection to the printer (assuming the printer is at all connected on the network) -- or you can assign the Static IP and the DNS information using the printer's front panel (Settings > Wireless).
See visual examples in
Settings to Improve Wireless Connectivity
Section:
- Printer Static IP Address
EWS:
Note that, instead of you selecting an IP Address for the printer, you can select / click the "Suggest a Manual IP Address".

Wifi / Wireless Direct
Your Printer supports WiFi Direct (Wireless Direct). If the standard wireless connection setup using your router does not work, you can try setting up and using WiFi / Wireless Direct in place of the standard Wireless Setup.
References:
User Guide, See Page 85
Printer Setup - Wireless Direct
Reminder - Be Aware:
Wifi Direct and standard wireless CANNOT be connected or set at the same time. Having WiFi / Wireless Direct active at the same time as standard Wireless will disrupt your Wireless / USB Connection.

Did you complete the Power Reset as described in in the document?

I have reinstalled everything and still to no results. I printed out the HP Network Configuration Page and the Printer status report. The Network configuration states that the active connection type is Wireless but the printer status report says that the active connection type is none. I am confused about this. Could this be the problem to why I cannot print? I have tried everything you suggested and all I can think of and nothing works.

Printer Status Report:
Connectivity Settings
15. Network Settings: Online / Offline / ???
16. Active Connection Type: None <<< indicates there is no connection at the time of the report
17. URL: http://xxx.xxx.xxx <<< Shoud be the correct IP address you assigned for the printer
18. Hostname: HP###### <<< (numbers and letter to ID the printer)
19. Admin Password: Set or Unset <<< dependent on whether you assisnged a password to the printer
If the printer "Network Status" indiates the printer is Offline, see:
'Offline' Printer Status Message Displays (Windows Vista)

I am assuming you do not have a USB cable connected to the printer at the same time you are trying to use Wireless.
Have you tried using the Wired connection, that is, connect an Ethernet cable to the printer and your router to add the printer to your home network? (This is dependent on your router supporting wired connections.)
The specifications indicate the printer supports Wired connection, Wireless, Wireless Direct, and USB.
Wired (Ethernet) | TCP/IP, Fast Ethernet 10/100BASE-TX |
Wireless | 802.11 b/g/n – 2.4 GHz networks only |
USB | Hi-speed 2.0 USB |
Wi-Fi Direct | Wireless network |

HP Help on the subject:
Printer Not Found During Network Driver Setup (Windows)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Checkthe printer's front panel and ensure the wireless setup is indeed what you expect - just one wrong number can kill the whole thing.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Log into your router and check for "Attached devices" --Ensure that the IP address you will use for the printer is not using the same IP address that you have used / assigned elsewhere.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
I am assuming you did toggle the Direct Wireless to make sure it is OFF -- assuming you are not trying to use Direct Wireless, of course. Remember that standard Wireless (with a router) and Direct Wireless (no router) are not only different -- they are not compatible: If you are using standard Wireless, then Direct Wireless must be OFF.
The original setting may lie to you -- do toggle the Direct Wireless on / off at least the one time to make sure the printer knows that the setting is really off. You need not repeat the toggle more than the one time. The setting will not "continue to lie" about its status.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Did you try using a Static IP Address for the printer? If not, and if you can understand how to do this, the static IP is recommended where that are connection issues and / or issues of signal stability.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Have you tried moving the printer a little bit -- say change the angle, slide the printer over one way or the other a few inches?
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Is the router and the printer at least 3 feet apart (about a meter)? Too close is as bad as too far away...
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
IF the setting is available on your computer, you might try increasing the transmit power on your computer's wireless.
