Hp 4650
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

Hello,

I have an existing scanner and would like to keep using it.

I only want to use my new HP 4650 for printing.  However, as soon as I  installed the software (with the CD that came with my HP 4650), I am unable to  connect to my old scanner.  I have to uninstall the HP4650 software from my PC in order to use my old scanner.  Is there any way to get around it?  Thank you.

@jlijli,

I read the quick reply. Thanks for the update.   It is awesome to have you back.  You've done exceptionally well by displaying splendid technical ability, immense patience and clinical efficiency to try and resolve the issue. Kudos to you for that.  🙂 As @KrazyToad is out for the day, I am responding on his behalf.

First, uninstall the printer software by following these steps:

  • Uninstall the printer from "programs and features" which can be accessed by doing a right-click on the Windows button (Please have the printer Off and disconnected during uninstallation.)
  • Check in device manager, if the printer is listed there, please delete it. (Right click on the Windows button to access device manager)
  • Go to devices and printers, in control panel and select any printer listed there and you will get some options on the top.
  • Click on print server properties.
  • You will get a popup, click on the drivers tab and delete all the HP printer drivers listed there if any.
  • Delete all the instances of your printer listed in devices and printers.
  • Restart the PC.
  • Once the PC is on the desktop, press Win + R, it would bring a Run dialog box,
  • Type %temp% in the run box and click Ok or hit the Enter button.
  • It would bring up the temporary files folder. Delete the files in the folder (You might not be able to delete all the files).
  • If possible, delete the printer from the registries using Regedit or using any other 3rd party application.
  • Ignore the Regedit option if it cannot be done.
  • Restart the PC again.

Then install the Windows Built-in drivers by following instructions from this link: http://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c01796879 There is an associated YouTube video on how to install it.

Connect the printer to your computer only when the setup prompts for the printer.

This should fix the issue.

Now you can use the other scanner for scanning.

Perform all these steps patiently as it is critical to resolving the issue. Good luck to you. I will keep a watch for your response.  Please note that I am not overloading you with steps but instead, giving you more information to work with. We are as eager as you are to get the issue fixed. I request you to perform all these steps till the issue is fixed.

Let me know how it goes and you have a great day!

To simply say thanks, please click the "Thumbs Up" button to give me a Kudos to appreciate my efforts to help. If this helps, please mark this as Accepted Solution as it will help several others with the same issue to get it resolved without hassles.

Take care and have a blessed week ahead. 🙂

Welcome to HP Support Forums. A really great platform for posting all your questions and finding solutions.

I understand that you would like to choose another scanner as the default scanner but you are unable to do so when you install the  HP 4650 printer

It will be my pleasure to assist you 😉

Once you have installed the HP 4650 printer try these steps

- Click Start, click Devices and Printers.

- Right-click the chosen Scanner you wish to use as your default scanner and select 'Set as default printer.' Right-click the printer icon again to verify that the correct printer is now set as the default. When the menu opens, a check mark should appear next to 'Set as Default.'

If a right-click menu doesn't display the 'Set as default printer' option, double-click the printer icon to display the Print Queue. Click on Printer and select 'Set as default printer' from the menu. A check mark next to the menu item or printer icon indicates that the printer is now set as the default printer. You can change your default printer setting at any time.

Even after you have set a printer as your default, you can still print from other printers on your system or network. To print to a different (secondary) printer, click on the File menu and select Print. The print dialog box displays all installed printers. Select the printer you wish to use and click OK to close the dialog box.

Please perform these steps at your convenience and keep me posted how it goes 👍

Thank you and have a great day 😀

Thanks a lot KrazyToad.  I don't see my scanner listed under Devices and Printers.  I also checked Scanners and Cameras and it's not there either, although my scanner does work perfectly.

Is there a way to NOT install the scanner software from HP 4650?  I had HP officejet 4500 before and it didn't mess with my scanner.  Thank you.
