HP LaserJet 1018 Printer
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Laserjet 1018 does not connect via 3.0 in windows 10. Is it possible not to buy the new one printer and just fix it with some kind of software?

Hi! @Matvey, Welcome to HP forums.

I understand you have USB connection issues with your printer.

Don't worry I'll try to help you out.

Did you make any changes to your printer?

Are you able to make a copy from your printer?

Have you tried checking using a different USB cable?

Are you using a USB 2.0 cable or a USB 3.0 cable to connect your printer?

As you mentioned you have issues connecting your printer using USB 3.0 connection.

HP printers are designed to work only with USB 2.0 ports and not on 3.0 ports.

However, you can try the steps recommended below and check if it helps.

Try using a USB 2.0 cable this should work on a USB 3.0 port.

Try connecting the printer to a different USB port and check if the issue persists.

Please try the steps recommended below.

Search Windows for device manager, and then click Device Manager in the list of results.
Click the Right arrow  next to the following entries to expand them, and then look for your printer in each list:
Printers
Print queues
Universal Serial Bus controllers
Other devices
If you see a yellow exclamation mark next to your printer or the phrase Unknown device, continue with the next step.
If you do not see your printer or a yellow exclamation mark in the list, skip to the next step to uninstall the driver.
Right-click the HP device/Unknown device entry or the entry with the symbol, and then click Update Driver Software. The Update Driver Software - Unknown Device wizard opens.
Click Search automatically for updated driver software. Follow the on-screen instructions to refresh the device manager.
Repeat these steps for all device entries with the symbol.

Hi. Thanks. After all system updates and reboots the problem resolved itself. Mystery and magic.

Hi!

I seem to have a simmilar problem as above mentioned. The printer (LJ 1018 with probably 1.0 USB cable) operated perfectly fine until the recent Windows 10 update. It did connect through a 3.0 USB (although I actually didn't pay attention which one is it, it was just the more convenient side to attach). Today I connected it as always, it was visible to the computer, but it didn't start printing selected document, didn't form a queue, didn't react to "print a test page". I ran a "find a problem tool" and it informed me that it's the usb 3.0 that seems to be a problem. I turned off and on both devices and tried printing docs, then test pages and running "find problem tool" with my two 2.0 usb one after the other (I tripple checked they are 2.0 type) and the effect was all the same - "the printer doesn't work with 3.0 usb"... I know it's because of the update but I have no idea what can I do to fix that. Is there a way you can help?

My view is that the folks from HP support want to be helpful, but don't actually want to tell you what the problem is.

But I will ... HP printers that were originally designed for USB 1.0 or 2.0 do not work with USB 3.0 ports.  HP has been uable (or unwilling, who knows) to create a software fix for this.  They will tell you to try all kinds of new drivers and reboots and the like in the hopes (as mentioned above) that somehow magic happens.  You might say vodoo instead of magic.

The solution I've found is to find a USB 2.0 port on my machine.  Many machines come with both, so try other ports if the one you are using doesn't work.

The "magic" in my case was the insight that the power cord slot is actually a USB port as well (I have a Lenovo Yoga laptop).  It would never have occurred to me before reading lots of posts to try plugging in my printer cable to the slot that charges my laptop, but it turns out that on this machine and maybe others, that is the ONLY USB port that is 2.0 compatible.

Once you plug into the right 2.0 port, printer works as it always did.  But if you are stuck with a 3.0 port, there is nothing (i.e., no software driver fix, no settings to put on the computer, etc.) that will make it work.

Best of luck
