Last week, my hard drive crashed. Luckily I had a mirrored drive, so I was able to retrieve all my data. I had to reinstall the software for the printer, after deleting every instance of it on the computer. Even after that, and several attempts to repeat it, the scanning is still failing. The HP Print and Scan Doctor keeps saying it cannot communicate with the scanner. I connect the scanner thru a USB, in order to avoid these kind of problems. But, again and again, whenever I change the computer or a hard drive, this same problem creeps up, and gives me a headache of monument proportions ( and, I never get headaches). I am seriously contemplating to change my brand of printers, since this is happening repeatedly. If you can get me going, then I might not get into that extra expense. I am in the process of getting SSD drives to replace my current hard drives, so I know I am going to face the same problem again. I wish HP made these printers user-friendly. My email is [edited]

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Installing the HP Full-featured drivers and enabling scan to computer may resolve this issue. Let us try these steps:

Step 1: Clean uninstallation of Pre-installed HP drivers

  1.  In Windows, search for and open Programs and features
  2.  Select your HP Printer
  3.  Select Uninstall
  4.  In Windows, search for and open Devices and printers
  5.  In the Devices and Printers windows look for your HP printer. If you see it listed right-click on it and choose ‘Delete’ or ‘Remove Device’
  6.  Open up the run command with the “Windows key + R” key combo.
  7.  Type printui.exe /s and click Ok. (Note: there is a space in between “printui.exe” and “/s”)
  8.  Click on the “Drivers” tab
  9.  Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it Click on it and click Remove at the bottom
  10.  Select Ok
  11.  Select Apply and Ok on the Print Server Properties windows
  12.  Close Devices and Printers, restart the computer.

Step 2: Click here to download the HP Full-featured driver.

Once downloaded, make sure to run the file to start the installation and follow the on-screen instructions.

Step 3: Enable Scan to computer

Open the HP Full-featured software by clicking on the printer icon on the desktop screen or by searching windows for HP Officejet pro 8610.

Search Windows for HP > HP OfficeJet 8610 > double click to open the HP Printer assistant > Click on Scan

Click on Manage scan to computer >

Click on Enable > Check the box at the bottom > Close

Let me know how this goes.

I tried this method 3 to 4 times, and I keep getting the same message. I am really tired now. How is it so difficult to connect a scanner. This was working before, and now gone, because I changed hard drives, very frustrating!!!!!

Are you able to make Photocopies?

I suggest you update the Printer Firmware from this Link: https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/HP-Officejet-Pro-8610-e-All-in-One-Printer-series/5... and check.

If Scan to Computer is Enabled and if you have already installed the Full Feature Software, I suggest you try assigning a Manual IP Address and check if the computer can communicate with the scanner

1) Obtain the IP address of the printer – You can touch the “wireless” icon on the printer control panel to obtain the IP address or print a Network Configuration Page
2) Type the IP address on your web browser to obtain the printer EWS page on your computer.
3) Go to "Network" tab - General - Select "Network protocols" - Select "Enable IPv4 only" (or similar) - Apply the settings.
4) Go to the “Network” tab – Click on “Wireless (802.11) – Then click on “Network address (IPv4)
5) Click Manual IP
6) If you see a Suggest a Manual IP Address button, click Manual IP address, and the Manual IP addresses are automatically filled out for you.
7) If your page does not have a button to suggest a manual IP address, type the IP address, subnet mask, and default gateway using the numbers shown in the report you printed.

Try Scanning and let me know how it goes 😊
