HP C4480
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

Hi there.   Since i had the HP C4480 all-in-one printer, it has been connected to my PC with the HPSolution Centre software working perfectly. My PC has been replaced by a laptop with Windows 7. I have tried to install the sofware for the printer using the links for this software in the HP website ans using the cd that came with the printer, in both ocasions always appears the message "HP Installer set up has stopped working". I have tried several times, even downloaded the HP Print and Scan Doctor...but still got the same message. I found in the forum somebody with the same problem back in 2015...followed the steps that were suggested at the time (uninstall, perform a clean boot in windows etc) with no success......Getting frustated now as I am unable to see ink levels etc

Any help it will be really appreciated

@chris,

Thanks for engaging in HP support Forums! This is a wonderful location to converse with the community, get assistance and find tips! I understand you are having issues related to HP Printer. Don't worry I'll do my best to help you with this.

Splendid effort and fabulous description of the issue before posting. Kudos to you on that score. You are a valued HP customer and it is paramount to assist you here. I take it as a privilege to share this platform with you.

This definitely looks like an issue with the software/driver conflict. In this scenario, I would suggest here is to do a clean install of the printer software first and check.

If the issue persists, let's try to uninstall the printer drivers and then install it using Windows built-in drivers.

First, unplug the USB cable from the printer if present.

Go to Control panel – Programs and feature – Select all the HP Photosmart printer entries and uninstall them.

Now go to Control panel – Devices and printer – Select all the printer entries and remove the device.

Restart your computer.

Click the bottom-left Start button on desktop, type device manager in the search box and tap Device Manager on the menu.

Once in device manager, click on the view tab in the top & choose “Show hidden devices”.

Then from the device manager list, check the entries under “Printer” – If there are any entries, please right click and choose “uninstall” – In the confirm device un-install pop-up, make sure you select the box which says “Delete the driver software for this device".

Also, check the entries under "printer queue" and "imaging devices" and repeat the same exercise. Delete any printer entry or any entry which says “Unknown device”.

Once done, close device-manger. Then press the "windows key" + "r" to get the "Run" window open - Type "printui.exe /s" (there is a space between .exe & /) and press enter.

Under print server properties, go to drivers - remove any entry there as well.

Again, go to run window, type – “c:/programdata” – Go to Hewlett Packard folder, remove any printer related folders & files.

Open run again, type “%temp%” and press enter to get the temporary files. Delete all the files here. Skip the items which cannot be deleted.

Now restart your computer again.

Open the Run window again, type “services.msc” and press ok to get services window.

Scroll down to “Remote Procedure Call (RPC)” – right-click and go to properties. Make sure the service is started and startup type is “Automatic”.

Now scroll up and go to “Function Discovery Provider Host” – right-click and select properties – Change the startup type to “manual” and start the service.

Repeat the same exercise on “Function Discovery Resource Publication” as well.

Now click on this link:  https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software11/COL30107/mp-74899-1/PS_AIO_03_C4400_NonNet_Full_Win_WW_130... download and install the printer software.

Connect the USB cable only when prompted and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the setup.

If the issue persists, I would suggest here is to Uninstall the printer drivers and then try installing the Windows built-in drivers for the printer.

Simply turn on the printer and connect the USB cable from the printer to the PC. The drivers will be installed in 2-3 minutes. Go to Control panel - Devices and printers to check the printer entry and make it as default printer if needed.

Check http://hp.care/2nxKJv8 for additional instructions.

Please let me know if this resolves the issue, or if you require further assistance!

Hi Jeet_Singh

I followed your advice step by step....however it didn't work. After I clicked on the link to finally install the software I got the same message again: HP Installer Setup has stopped working.

I installed the printer as you suggested at the end of your response by  simply connecting the printer to the laptop:I can print, I can scan...but I am dissapointed not being able to use the software.

I check the info in your second link. Regarding ink levels, it mentions that you could print a self-test page from the control panel, I believe I can't do this with my model of printer. Knowing ink levels is one of the things that I find most useful......

Thanks a lot for taking the time to respond ...and if you know or anyone knows a misterious way to know the ink levels without the HP software installed, please let me know.

Any other advice it will be really appreciated, I will definitely give it a go

Thanks again Jeet_Singh

@chris,

Thank you for replying,

As I see that you have installed the printer drivers using Windows built in drivers and now you are able to print and scan. However, you are having issues in checking the ink levels. Don't worry we'll work together to help you find a solution.

I have found a wonderful document which should help you with this issue - HP Printers - How to Check Ink or Toner Levels

If the issue persists, I would suggest here is to create a new user account and then install the printer and check.

Please ensure you uninstall the printer software and once done, restart the computer.

Follow the steps here to create a local account on your PC: Create a local user or administrator account in Windows

Now, login to the new account and then try to install the printer and check.

Let me know how it goes for further assistance.

If they did, that’s awesome!

Give us some reinforcement by clicking the solution and kudos buttons,

That’ll help us and others see that we’ve got the answers!

Good Luck.
