My HP LaserJet M234sdw will not connect to the internet. I have shut down and restarted everything, even the router. The error code 49 has shown up. No matter what I do, I cannot get connected to the internet.

Hi @Louise1973,.

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand your HP LaserJet M234sdw is showing a 49 error and will not connect to the internet. Let’s go through a few steps to check what could be causing this and get the printer back to a ready state.

Power reset the printer
Turn the printer off using the power button.
Unplug the power cord from the rear of the printer and the wall, wait 60 seconds, then plug it back in and turn it on.

Disconnect all cables and network connections
Remove the Ethernet cable (if connected) and make sure no USB cable is attached.
Power the printer on with no connections to isolate the error.

Check if the error clears when idle
If the printer reaches the Ready state without the 49 error, the issue is likely related to a job, driver, or network communication.
If the error appears immediately, it may indicate a firmware or internal issue.

Clear stuck print jobs from the computer
On your computer, open Devices and Printers and cancel all pending print jobs.
Restart the computer to ensure no old jobs are resent to the printer.

Reconnect the printer to Wi-Fi using HP Smart
Once the printer powers on without the error, open the HP Smart app.
Use Add Printer or Set Up a New Printer to reconnect it to your Wi-Fi network.

Check firmware update (only if printer stays on)
If the printer remains stable, allow it to complete any firmware update prompts.
Firmware corruption or incomplete updates are a common cause of 49 errors.

Test with a simple print job
After reconnecting, print a basic test page from HP Smart.
Avoid sending large or complex documents until stability is confirmed.

Understand what Error 49 means
A 49 error usually indicates a firmware crash triggered by corrupted data, a stuck print job, or a network communication issue.
Once the offending job or connection is removed, the printer normally recovers.

I hope this helps.
