HP OfficeJet Pro 8710 All-in-One Printer

I have an 8710 All-in-One. It will print a test page. My wife can print from her laptop. I cannot print from my laptop - but thru the HP Smart App (on my laptop), I can print a test page. This is crazy. Whether I am printing DOC or XLS or PDF or other, it just says "Printer is Asleep" or "Printer Offline" - despite the fact that the HP Smart App reports the printer is "Ready" - and my wife can successfully print. I have HP Smart App set to automatic updates, but I checked just to make sure and all HP software is updated. I have already done the usual stuff: turning off the printer and restarting it, uninstalling the printer and reinstalling it, uninstalling HP Smart App and reinstalling it. My wife can print. I cannot. That's the story.

Hi @painintheprintr,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you’re dealing with a frustrating issue where your HP OfficeJet 8710 All-in-One printer is showing as “Printer Offline” on your laptop, even though it prints test pages and works for your wife’s laptop. Let’s work through some potential solutions to resolve this issue.

1. Check Printer Status and Connection

Verify Network Connection:

  • Ensure your laptop is connected to the same Wi-Fi network as the printer. Sometimes network issues can cause connectivity problems.

Check Printer Status:

  • On your laptop, go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers.
  • Right-click on the HP OfficeJet 8710 and select See what’s printing.
  • Ensure the status is not set to Offline. If it is, try setting it to Online.

2. Set Printer as Default

  1. Set Default Printer:
    • Go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers.
    • Right-click on your HP OfficeJet 8710 and select Set as default printer.

3. Update or Reinstall Printer Drivers

Update Drivers:

  • Visit the HP Support website and download the latest drivers for the HP OfficeJet 8710.

Reinstall Drivers:

  • Uninstall the current printer drivers through Control Panel > Devices and Printers.
  • Download and install the latest drivers from the HP website.

4. Configure Printer Port

  1. Check Printer Port Settings:
    • Go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers.
    • Right-click on the HP OfficeJet 8710 and select Printer properties.
    • Go to the Ports tab and ensure the correct port is selected. Typically, this should be an IP address or a USB port.

5. Restart Print Spooler Service

  1. Restart Print Spooler:
    • Press Windows + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
    • Locate Print Spooler in the list, right-click it, and select Restart.

6. Check Firewall and Antivirus Settings

  1. Firewall/Antivirus:
    • Sometimes, firewall or antivirus software can block printer communication. Temporarily disable them to check if they are causing the issue.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
