8710 Officejet Pro dynamic security preventing printing

Dynamic security settings are preventing printing using a non-HP cartridge, other cartridges from the same pack are working fine, the yellow cartridge is preventing printing.  I have tried to follow some instructions to roll back the firmware but I cannot find any 'firmware' on the HP support site. I do believe this issues was caused by a recent update.

I am absolutely horrified that an update by HP can prevent my printer from doing its job of printing.  This is just too much control HP!

Do I really have to buy a new printer in order to print my documents, what an environmental waste & I am clearly not going to buy another HP printer,  This is crazy on so many levels.

Dynamic Security is indeed a thing on this printer -- that it would impact just one ink cartridge seems rather odd -- my understanding is that the security is all or none.  So, No -- I cannot explain the yellow cartridge being impacted and not all the non-HP cartridges installed in the printer.  You could try a different yellow cartridge.

Ask your ink vendor whether they adhere to the requirement that each ink cartridge they sell includes an embedded HP chip.  

True -- Even on a printer where the security had not been invoked previously, it is possible for the door to be kicked shut when the security / firmware is updated.  

At this writing, a Firmware update was issued back in June 2026.

This software tool will help you update your printer to the latest firmware. Please refer to Enhancement/Fixes for more detail about the firmware update.

Reminder: Dynamic security enabled printer. This Firmware includes dynamic security measures, which are used to block cartridges using a non-HP chip or modified or non-HP electronic circuitry. The printer is intended to work only with new or reused cartridges that have a new or reused HP chip or circuitry. Periodic firmware updates will maintain the effectiveness of the dynamic security measures and block cartridges that previously worked. More at: www.hp.com/learn/ds.

Note: For printers manufactured prior to December 1, 2016 dynamic security will not be enabled by this firmware. Please note that HP cannot guarantee the quality or reliability of non-HP cartridges.

True -- In spite of the instructions out on the 'net to downgrade firmware, this rarely works.

Regardless, you will not find those instructions here since such violates the HP security guidelines.

True, too -- you might like to replace your printer.  Be aware that HP is not the only company who uses this type of security.  Other companies, of course, do not call any such security by the same name.  READ before you purchase, in other words, regardless of brand.
