After printing some documents, my printer shows Error 49 and will not print anymore. I tried to switch off and then on but the Error 49 is persistent. Would appreciate some help and guidance to fix this problem. Thank you in advance

Hi @George2510,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

Error 49 on an HP printer usually indicates a firmware error or a problem with the print job being processed. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and resolve the issue.

Power Cycle the Printer:

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  • Wait for about 30 seconds to 1 minute.
  • Plug the printer back in and turn it on.

Disconnect Network Cables:

  • If your printer is connected to a network, disconnect the network cable.
  • Try printing a test page or any internal report directly from the printer's control panel.
  • If the printer works without the network cable connected, there may be an issue with the print job or the network itself.

Update Firmware:

  • Check the HP website for your specific printer model and see if there are any firmware updates available.
  • If updates are available, follow the instructions provided by HP to update the firmware.

Clear Print Queue:

  • If the error occurs when printing from a computer, check the print queue for any stuck or corrupt print jobs.
  • Cancel all print jobs in the print queue and try printing again.

Print a Configuration Page:

  • Print a configuration or self-test page directly from the printer's control panel.
  • This will help you determine if the issue is related to a specific print job or a more general problem.

Check for Corrupt Print Files:

  • If the error occurs with a specific document, try printing a different document to see if the problem persists.
  • The file itself may be corrupt and causing the error.

Check for Third-Party Devices:

  • If your printer is connected to other devices, such as a print server or external hardware, try bypassing these devices and connecting the printer directly to a computer.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Which model of printer? The 49 errors indicate in most cases that the printer has received print data that it does not know how to interpret (an electronic "Huh"). Often caused by either a corrupted print job or an incompatibility between a print job generated by a updated program. The usual way to resolve the issue is to update your firmware to the current revision. Keep in mind that updating firmware might result in non-HP cartridges failing to work when they previously did.
