HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 All-in-One Printer
macOS 12.0 Monterey

The HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 All-in-One Printer is locked. I am unable to unlock it, and I have to change the network. Even the factory reset is locked under Settings and Maintenance. Everything is locked.

Hi @AHoward2026l,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand your HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 All‑in‑One Printer showing all settings locked, preventing network changes and factory reset access. Let’s go through a few checks.

Check if Embedded Web Server Lock Is Enabled

  • Locate the printer’s IP address on the printer display (Wireless icon > Network Information).
  • Open a web browser on a computer connected to the same network.
  • Enter the printer IP address in the address bar and press Enter.
  • When the Embedded Web Server page opens, select Settings.
  • Check whether Administrator Settings Lock or Printer Lock is enabled.

Note: Some administrative locks can only be changed through the printer’s web interface.

Attempt Access Using the Administrator Credentials

  • When prompted, enter the administrator username and password.
  • If credentials were never changed, try the default admin login if available.
  • After logging in, open Security > Access Control.
  • Disable Control Panel Lock or Administrator Lock if enabled.
  • Apply the changes and restart the printer.

Note: Lock settings can prevent access to maintenance and network options on the control panel.

Perform a Partial Reset Using Button Combination

  • Turn the printer on.
  • Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
  • Press and hold the Cancel (X) and Wireless buttons on the printer.
  • While holding the buttons, reconnect the power cord.
  • Continue holding the buttons for 10–15 seconds, then release.

Note: This reset may clear configuration locks and restore default network settings.

Reconnect the Printer to the Network

  • After the reset, wait for the printer to reach the Home screen.
  • Open Wireless Settings on the control panel.
  • Select Wireless Setup Wizard.
  • Choose your Wi-Fi network from the list.
  • Enter the Wi-Fi password and complete the connection.

I hope this helps.
