I recently inadvertently reset my C4580 after experiencing print cartridge problems (replacing the cartridge fixed that), The printer prints and scans fine with the USB cable but won't now work on WiFi (it did before). I can't see how to get this working again, either by running HPSmart or HPPSDR. Googling for solutions hasn't helped. Running HPPSDR without the USB cable takes me to a screen where I can choose "Network - Wireless", which asks me to plug in the USB cable. As I do so, another screen appears asking me to wait for the USB connection to complete. That screen persists for ever! I am using Windows 10 on a Dell laptop. I know it's an old printer but I don't want to throw it away!

Hi @PeterM,
Welcome to the HP Support Community
I understand you are facing an issue with the cartridge of your HP Photosmart C4580 All-in-One Not to worry I will help you to get a resolution to resolve the issue.
Let's perform a power drain:
- With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer and also unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
- Remove USB cable, if present.
- Wait for 2-3 minutes, press and hold the power button on your printer for about 30 seconds to remove any additional charge.
- Now plug back the power cable straight to a wall outlet without any surge protector or an extension cord (This is important) and then plug back the power cord to the printer.
- Turn on the printer and wait till warm-up period finishes and the printer is idle
Reset the printer
Reset the printer to recover from printer errors or failures.
If your printer has a rechargeable battery, remove it.
With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the printer.
Unplug the power cord from the power source.
Wait 60 seconds.
Reconnect the power cord to a wall outlet and to the printer.
- NOTE:
HP recommends plugging the printer directly into a wall outlet.
Turn on the printer to complete the reset.
Clean the ink cartridge and carriage electrical contacts
Remove any debris or buildup from the contacts on the cartridges and in the carriage.
Open the door or lid to the cartridge access area. Wait until the carriage stops moving before continuing.
Remove the cartridge indicated in the error message from the carriage.
Carriages with cartridge latches: Open the latch, and then pull the cartridge up and out of the slot.
Carriages without cartridge latches: Gently press down on the cartridge to release it, and then pull it out of the slot.
Holding the cartridge by the sides, remove any protective tape that still might be on the contacts.
- CAUTION:
Do not touch the ink nozzles or the copper-colored electrical strip. Touching or trying to remove these parts can result in clogs, ink failure, and bad electrical connections.
Lightly dampen a lint-free cloth with distilled water, and then wipe the copper-colored contacts on the cartridge.
Lightly dampen a lint-free cloth or swab with distilled water, and then clean the electrical contacts in the carriage.
Wait 10 minutes for the contacts to dry, and then reinsert the cartridge into its color-coded slot.
Repeat these steps for the other cartridge if it was indicated in the error message.
Close the door or lid to the cartridge access area.

Hi @PeterM,
Welcome to the HP Support Community
I understand you are facing a connectivity issue with your HP Photosmart C4580 All-in-One. Not to worry I will help you to get a resolution to resolve the issue.
To assist you better:
- How far is the printer located from the WiFi router?
- Do you have a dual-band router?
- If you have a dual-band router and both 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks share the same name/SSID, the printer will not be able to connect to the network. In this case, contact your Internet service provider to assign different names to both networks.
While you respond to that, Let's perform a power drain:
- With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer and also unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
- Remove USB cable, if present.
- Wait for 2-3 minutes, press and hold the power button on your printer for about 30 seconds to remove any additional charge.
- Now plug back the power cable straight to a wall outlet without any surge protector or an extension cord (This is important) and then plug back the power cord to the printer.
- Turn on the printer and wait till warm-up period finishes and the printer is idle
Update the printer firmware
- Click here to download and install the latest printer firmware from your product
- Click here to know different methods of updating printer firmware.
If the issue persists, then please follow the below steps to resolve the issue.
Use HP Print and Scan Doctor to check connectivity
Download a special version of HP Print and Scan Doctor specifically created to help with printer offline conditions.
- Download HP Print and Scan Doctor.
- Run HPPSdr.exe from the download location on your computer.
- Once HP Print and Scan Doctor opens, click Start, and then select your printer.
- If your printer in not in the list, turn it off and on, and then click Retry.
- If there is a connection problem, follow the instructions in HP Print and Scan Doctor.
- If a screen prompts you to turn on printer updates, click Yes.
- If a screen prompts you to make your printer the default printer, click Yes.
Set a manual IP-
- To set a manual IP and try the steps below -
- Touch on the wifi icon ((i)) on the printer, and take down the IP address
- Open a web browser (ex Chrome or Mozilla) and type in the printer's IP
- then go to network ---> general ---> network protocols ---> select IPV4 only-->apply
- Go to wireless ---> wireless 802.11---> select manual ip ---> apply
- Enter 8.8.8.8 for the first DNS and 8.8.4.4 for the second DNS.
then go to settings on the main EWS page --> power management ---> select sleep mode to max 15min
Connect the printer to the TCP/IP port
- Touch the wifi icon ((i)) on the printer and take down the IP address
- Click Start/Devices and Printers. Right-click on your HP Printer. Select Printer Properties. Select the Ports tab at the top.
- Select Add Port. Select Standard TCP/IP Port. Select New Port.
- Follow the Add Port Wizard. Under Printer Name or IP Address. Example: 192.168.1.15. The IP address will be copied under Port Name.

Gaya1239:
I followed all your instructions but they have not solved the problem.
I am thinking that the printer needs to know the network SSID and password/key. The only way I can see to do this would be with a USB connection. The printer/scanner works OK via USB, If I unplug the USB cable, run HPPSDR and click "My printer is not listed", it prompts me to temporarily plug in the USB cable. HPPSDR displays "Wait for USB connection to complete" but then stops responding completely. Please tell me how I should set the network SSID/key into the printer.

I don't see a blue envelope. Thereis a white envelope but clicking that shows only a private message from some years ago. I will wait a few more days but it would be easier if you just send me an email!

Gaya1239:
A friend suggested that maybe the HP C4580 printer can be set up for WiFi as an "Access point". I checked by enabling Wifi on a nearby laptop. With the C4580 switched-on and the Blue Wifi indicator lit, the laptop shows that there IS a network available called "hpsetup". However, if I try to connect to it I see "Unable to connect".
Is there a way to set up the C4580 WiFi using this method? I didn't see anything about this in any of the HP documentation.
Still cannot see a blue envelope or your private message.
regards

Apply the settings.
You have now completed the Wireless configuration.
if you have Apple
Click the Airport on the top right corner on the Mac and select your network.
Click on the Apple.
Click system preferences, click the printers and scanners icon, then click the + sign, then select the printer from the list, make sure the printer listed beside use: shows the proper printer name and not Airprint,(Airprint is a preinstalled apple driver with basic functionality) click on the add button. You might have to click on the drop down to select your printer.

I have still not seen your private message, and you seem to be starting your replies again, repeating your previous instructions. At one point you say "Once you click on Wireless (802.11) ..." but don't say what is the program that you are running which is showing the button labelled "Wireless" which you want me to click. I don't recognise the screenshot you show. Which program is showing this screenshot? I have not seen this screenshot before in HPSmart or HPPSDR. Is there another program I should run to see this?
I just want to know how to set up the C4580 for WiFi. I don't need to keep re-installing the firmware or drivers - I did this the first time you instructed me to do it, and it was already up-to-date then anyway.
