HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M283fdw

I have never in my life been so frustrated with a piece of hardware!!! From the very first time I used this printer until today, it has C-O-N-S-T-A-N-T-L-Y given me trouble--either completely being offline all the time or stopping printing in the middle of a task. Every single time I start a new print session, I have to turn off the printer, and then turn it back on, reset the router,  to try and get the printer back online. Sometimes it works, sometimes not. I go to my print settings and it says "Unknown status." If it starts printing, it'll work fine for a while, then all of a sudden print jobs will stop. I have updated drivers, made sure my network settings are good, but NOTHING resolves this persistent issue permanently and I'm completely fed up with it. THIS PRINTER IS TRASH!!!!! I bought it to print programs for my son's wedding and it gave me hell--wouldn't feed the cardstock, stopping in the middle of the job, going offline at random times, etc. Since then, I've been trying to make the best of it for general use, but I really wish I could toss it out a window somewhere because it's more trouble than it's worth to bother with it. I can never just send a print job to the printer (not the first job of a printing session, anyway). And God forbid I need something quickly (like trying to print Amazon return slips or doctor's forms when I'm heading out the door). It's extremely frustrating.

@AMP123456, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I'm really sorry to hear about the frustrating experience you've had with your HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M283fdw. I completely understand how disruptive it can be, especially when you're relying on it for important tasks like wedding programs or time-sensitive documents.

Let’s work together to get this resolved once and for all. Based on your description, it sounds like the issue may be related to network stability, printer sleep settings, or driver configuration. Here are some steps that have helped many users in similar situations:

Assign a Static IP Address

Dynamic IPs can cause the printer to go offline frequently. Assigning a static IP helps maintain a stable connection.

  • On the printer’s control panel:
Setup > Network Setup > Wireless Settings > Advanced Settings > IP Settings > Manual
  • Set an IP address outside your router’s DHCP range (e.g., if your router uses 192.168.1.2–192.168.1.100, use 192.168.1.200).
  • Save and restart the printer.

Disable IPv6

Some routers and printers don’t handle IPv6 well.

  • On the printer:
    Setup > Network Setup > Advanced Settings > IPv6 > Off

Update Firmware

Outdated firmware can cause connectivity issues.

Use HP Smart App

These tools can automatically detect and fix many common issues.

Change Printer Sleep Settings

If the printer goes into deep sleep, it may not wake up properly.

  • On the printer:
Setup > Preferences > Sleep Mode > Set to 30 minutes or more
  • Also check Auto-Off and disable it if enabled.

Reinstall Printer Using TCP/IP Port

Instead of using WSD (Web Services for Devices), install the printer using its static IP:

  • Go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers > Add a Printer > The printer I want isn’t listed
  • Choose Add a printer using a TCP/IP address or hostname
  • Enter the static IP you assigned earlier.

Additional Tips

  • Ensure your router firmware is up to date.
  • Avoid using USB and Wi-Fi simultaneously.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
