We have a new deskjet 4255e that we are trying to set up.  When I type in the serial number for more support it tells me the serial number is invalid.  I have tried all the troubleshooting steps.  Is there any way to talk to someone?

Thank you for reaching out. We’ll get your new DeskJet 4255e sorted out.
If the HP website is saying the serial number is invalid, it usually means one of the following:

  • The printer has not yet been fully activated in HP’s system
  • A character in the serial number is being misread
  • The S/N label has similar-looking characters (O/0, B/8, I/1, etc.)
  • The printer hasn’t completed setup through the HP Smart app

Let’s go through the most effective steps to fix this before reaching phone support.

1. Double-check the correct Serial Number location

For the DeskJet 4255e, the S/N is located:

  • On the rear of the printer, near the power connector
  • On the inside of the ink-access door
  • On the shipping box (white label with barcodes)

Make sure you are entering:

  • No spaces
  • Exactly 10 characters
  • Only capital letters and numbers

Common mix-ups:

  • 0 (zero) vs O
  • 8 vs B
  • 1 vs I or L


2. Complete the initial activation using the HP App

If the printer setup wasn’t completed, the serial number sometimes won’t register yet.

Please try:

  1. Install HP App from: HP App – For HP Printers, Laptops, and Tech Accessories | HP® Official Site
  2. Add your DeskJet 4255e
  3. Complete activation and HP+ setup (if using HP+)
  4. Sign in with the same HP account when registering the S/N

After activation, the S/N usually becomes valid within minutes.

3. Try the alternative registration page

Instead of support lookup, try manual registration:

Enter your HP account → Add a product → Enter S/N manually.
