Someone set up the admin password to my HP printer and now I'm locked out.
I have tried every single method from this post (https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Printing-Errors-or-Lights-Stuck-Print-Jobs/I-lost-my-deskjet-3790-admi... and others ), but to no result.

Whenever I print the network settings page, it states that the admin password is still set.

I am at my wits end with this printer, and this company tbh. This is madness and should be a no brainer!

I am locked out from HP Smart on Windows 11 and the HP App, on both Android and iOS.

I understand your HP Ink Advantage 790 printer is locked by an unknown admin password, and you can’t access it through HP Smart on Windows 11, Android, or iOS. Let’s go through a few steps to check what could be causing this and what options are realistically available.

Understand what the admin password controls
The admin password protects the printer’s network and security settings, including access through HP Smart and the Embedded Web Server.
Once set, it is stored securely on the printer and does not reset automatically.

Confirm the password is still active
Printing the Network or Wireless Configuration page and seeing “Admin Password: Set” confirms the lock is still enabled.
This also confirms the printer has not accepted any reset attempts so far.

Try a full network reset from the printer control panel
From the printer’s control panel, go to Setup → Network Settings → Restore Network Defaults (menu names may vary).
This resets Wi-Fi settings only; on many Ink Advantage models, it does not remove the admin password.

Perform a full power reset
Turn the printer on, then unplug the power cord from the rear while it is still on.
Wait 60 seconds, plug it directly into a wall outlet, and turn it back on to allow a clean initialization.

Understand the limitation of button-based resets
On the Ink Advantage 790 series, button combinations and semi-full resets do not clear the admin password once it is set.
This is by design and is different from older DeskJet models.

Check whether the printer is enrolled in HP+
If the printer was enrolled in HP+ during initial setup, security settings are further locked.
In HP+ enrollment, admin credentials cannot be removed by local resets.

Why HP Smart access is blocked
HP Smart requires admin authorization to manage the printer.
If the admin password is unknown, the app will refuse access on all platforms (Windows, Android, iOS).
