Common problems for Connectivity Issues
We would like to share some of the most frequently asked questions about Printer Wi-Fi, Connectivity Issues and Offline Status. Check out this link: HP printer is offline or unavailable.
HP Recommended

After moving and changing my WiFi network, I tried to reset the network settings on my SmartTank 5101 printer. I followed the instructions and got the blue WiFi light blinking so it’s in setup mode. Initially the cancel button was lit up too (solid red) but later it disappeared with only the WiFi light blinking. However, when I used the app to search for new printers, it couldn’t find the printer. I clicked “printer not found” and was told to connect to the printer network. There was only a network called “DIRECT-1D-HP Smart Tank 5100” and no network with “setup” in the name. I connected to this network using the password on the info sheet but the WiFi light is still blinking. I was now able to find to printer under “choose an available printer” but it said setup incomplete and asked me to put in the printer PIN, which I did, but then it got stuck on that page.

Please let me know how to resolve this issue and connect my printer to the new network.

Hi @Marshesychia,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I know how frustrating this can be, especially after moving and trying everything to reconnect your HP Smart Tank 5101 to the new Wi-Fi. The fact that the printer shows DIRECT-1D-HP Smart Tank 5100 means it’s in Wi-Fi Direct mode, not full setup mode, which is why the HP Smart app says “setup incomplete.”

Here’s how to fix this and get your printer back online:

Why This Happens

  • The printer didn’t fully reset its network settings.
  • It’s broadcasting Wi-Fi Direct instead of the Setup network.
  • The HP app can see the printer, but can’t complete the setup because the printer isn’t in the correct mode.

Recommended Steps

1. Fully Reset Network Settings

  • With the printer powered on, press and hold:
    • Wireless button + cancel button together for 5 seconds.
  • The Wi-Fi light should blink fast (not slow). This means Setup Mode is active.
  • If the Cancel button lights up briefly and then goes off, that’s normal.

2. Forget Wi-Fi Direct

  • On your phone or PC, disconnect from DIRECT-1D-HP Smart Tank 5100.
  • Do NOT use Wi-Fi Direct for setup; it’s only for direct printing without a router.

3. Connect via HP App

4. If the Printer Still Doesn’t Show

  • Restart your router and printer.
  • Make sure your phone is on the same 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network.
  • Temporarily disable the VPN or firewall on your device.

5. Update Printer Firmware

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
