HP LaserJet Pro M203dw Printer
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Setting up this printer using HP Smart and I get the message "A custom password has been setup for this printer". I know they are looking for the "PIN" number but I can't find a sticker for the pin. When I print out the configuration report the only password shown is the "direct connect" password, which is the default 12345678.

I did a reset on the printer. I bought the printer used and am wondering if this is the problem? Any help would be appreciated. As is, I can't set up the wireless feature. Direct connect via USB works fine, it's a great speedy little printer.

Hi @spotdog19,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding your printer!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Try These steps:

Check for Stickers or Labels:

  • Typically, the PIN or default password is found on a sticker or label on the printer itself, often near the Wi-Fi or connectivity panel. Recheck these areas carefully.

Print the Network Configuration Page:

  • This page usually contains network details but might not include custom passwords directly.
  • To print this, press and hold the Resume button on the printer until the Ready light begins blinking, then release.

Factory Reset:

  • Perform a factory reset to restore default settings, which may remove custom passwords.
  • For a hard reset, ensure the printer is powered on. Disconnect all cables except the power cable, then hold the Wireless and Cancel buttons simultaneously for about five seconds. This should reset network settings.

Connecting via USB:

  • Try connecting the printer to your computer using a USB cable. This can sometimes bypass PIN requirements and enable you to access the printer settings through HP Smart.

HP Smart App:

  • Use the HP Smart App to manage the printer settings once it's connected via USB. You might be able to reset or update the network and password settings via this method.

Contacting Previous Owner:

  • If possible, contact the previous owner to see if they have the custom PIN or password details.

Hope this helps!

Take care, and have an amazing day!
