I have the printer installed on MAC (14 Sonoma). Connecting to a VDI session via VMWare (OmniSSA) Horizon, Windows VM. Trying to print to the HP printer that is  redirected into the session. I can see the job reaching back to the printer queue but not printing due "Wrong document format"

[13/Dec/2024:11:57:26 -0500] [Client 205] Returning IPP client-error-document-format-not-supported for Send-Document (ipp://localhost:631/printers/HPP1606dn) from localhost.

Could you please help me with the correct driver

Hi @Zinger4,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

I'd be glad to help you!

I can imagine how challenging it must be to troubleshoot printing issues in a virtual session, especially when the document format error keeps appearing. Let's try to work through this issue together.

Note: This printer is pretty older version and this could be compatibility issues with your current OS.

  • Is the HP P1606dn installed and recognized correctly on the Mac, and can you print directly from the Mac without issues?
  • Are you using the HP-provided drivers or a generic driver for the printer on the Windows VM?
  • Have you tried printing from other applications on the Windows VM, or is this issue occurring with all print jobs?

Let's try these steps.

Ensure Correct Driver on Windows VM:

  • Check the printer driver installed on the Windows VM. The HP Universal Print Driver may be necessary for compatibility with redirected printers.
  • Try downloading and installing the latest version of the HP Universal Print Driver from HP’s website and assign it to the redirected printer.

Check Printer Settings in VMWare Horizon:

  • Ensure that the printer is properly redirected from your Mac to the Windows VM via the Horizon client.
  • In the Horizon client, go to SettingsPrinters and make sure the HP P1606dn is selected and correctly mapped.

Set Printer Format to PCL or PostScript:

  • The error you're seeing suggests the document format may not be supported by the driver. Try configuring the printer to use PCL or PostScript drivers on both the Mac and the Windows VM.
  • In the Windows VM, check the printer properties to ensure the correct language (PCL or PostScript) is set.

Use the IPP Printer on Windows VM:

  • Instead of relying on the redirected printer, try setting up the printer directly on the Windows VM by adding it via IPP (Internet Printing Protocol).
  • Add the printer using its IP address and test the connection by printing directly.

Update Firmware and Software:

  • Check if there are any firmware updates available for the HP P1606dn on the HP support site. Sometimes, updating the firmware can resolve compatibility issues with virtualized environments.
  • Also, update both the VMWare Horizon client on the Mac and the virtual machine tools in the Windows VM to ensure compatibility.

You may also find the snapshot below for the compatible version of Mac OS for your printer.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance
