HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M283fdw

I try to turn off Wi-Fi Direct  on my Color LaserJet MFP M283: I choose "off" on the "Networking - Wi-Fi Direct Setup" tab of the configuration page and click "Apply". It seems to be turned off, but after a restart of the printer or after a wake-up from sleep, Wi-Fi Direct is turned on again.

The firmware datecode is "20231206", checking for updates results in a message that the firmware is up to date.

How can I permanently switch off Wi-Fi Direct?

Hi @Günni50 ,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you're experiencing difficulties turning off Wi-Fi Direct on your HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M283fdw and it keeps reactivating after restarts or wake-ups, there might be a firmware issue or a persistent setting causing the problem.

Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the issue:

  • Factory Reset: Perform a factory reset on your printer. This will revert all settings to their default values, which should include turning off Wi-Fi Direct. However, keep in mind that this will also erase any custom settings you have configured.
  • Update Firmware: Even if the firmware check indicates that your firmware is up to date, there might be a newer version available that addresses this issue. Check HP's official website for firmware updates specific to your printer model and follow the instructions to update the firmware manually.
  • Check for Known Issues: Look for any known issues or bugs related to Wi-Fi Direct on your printer model.
  • Disable Wi-Fi Direct via Embedded Web Server (EWS): Instead of using the printer's control panel, try disabling Wi-Fi Direct through the Embedded Web Server (EWS). Access the EWS by entering the printer's IP address into a web browser, navigate to the Networking or Connectivity section, and look for Wi-Fi Direct settings. Disable it from there and see if the change persists.
  • Check for Interference: Ensure that there are no other devices or software conflicting with the Wi-Fi Direct settings on your printer. Sometimes, interference from other devices or nearby networks can cause unexpected behavior.
  • Temporary Workaround: If none of the above solutions work, you might consider using a temporary workaround, such as keeping the printer disconnected from the network when you don't need to use Wi-Fi Direct.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Hello Gaya1239,

thank you for your reply.

The bullet point "Disable Wi-Fi Direct via Embedded Web Server (EWS): " hinted me to a possible solution: I have been trying to turn Wi-Fi Direct off via EWS, but what I did not try was turning it off via the printer's control panel. I have tried it now and restarted the printer, and for know Wi-Fi Direct seems to stay turned off. Let's see if this persists for 24 hours or so. If it does, this will be my solution for the issue.
