HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M281fdw

I am following the instructions provided to change my WiFi Direct password by entering the IP address in a web browser. However, I can see the current WIFi Direct password but it’s grayed out and won’t let me change it. Are there any additional steps or help you can provide?

Hi @SLS-10,

Welcome to the HP Support Community

I understand you need information on setting up a custom Wi-Fi direct with your HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M281fdw. Not to worry I will help you to get a resolution to resolve the issue.

  • Access the printer's web-based homepage, as known as the Embedded Web Server (EWS), to change the Wi-Fi Direct settings.
  • Make sure your computer or mobile device is connected to your printer over the internet or with Wi-Fi Direct.
  • On your computer or mobile device, open the printer EWS.
  • NOTE: You cannot access the EWS over a USB connection.
  • For Wi-Fi or Ethernet connections, open the Advanced Settings (EWS) in the HP Smart app or type the printer IP address into a web browser address bar.
  • For Wi-Fi Direct connections, open a web browser, type 192.168.223.1 into the address bar, and then press Enter.
  • If a login or certificate window displays, complete the information to finish opening the EWS.
  • If a website security certificate displays, click Continue to open the printer homepage.
  • If a login window opens, type admin for the username, and then type the PIN found on the label located underneath or on the back of the printer, or the password set by the printer administrator.
  • On the printer home page, click Network, select Wi-Fi Direct, and then click Status.
  • Clicking Wi-Fi Direct under the Network tab
  • On the Status screen, click Edit Settings, and then customize the settings to make the Wi-Fi Direct connection more secure.
  • Status: Turn Wi-Fi Direct on or off. HP recommends turning Wi-Fi Direct off when you are not using it.
  • Wi-Fi Direct Name: Change the printer name to something you can recognize easily but is not personally identifiable to protect your privacy.
  • Connection Method: Choose Manual or Advanced to require a password to use the printer. HP does not recommend using the Automatic method to avoid unwanted access and printouts.
  • Wi-Fi Direct Password: Create a custom password to add extra security, or click Generate to randomly generate a password.
  • EXAMPLE OF UPDATED WI-FI DIRECT SECURITY SETTINGS
  • Updating the Wi-Fi Direct security settings

If the issue persists, then wneed to perform an NVRAM reset to restore the printer back to its original settings.

The reset instructions are specific for your printer and performing those steps on a different printer may brick the device.

I've sent you a private message with reset instructions, follow the reset instruction to perform a full reset and re-initialize the printer.

In order to access your private messages, click the private message icon on the upper right corner of your HP Community profile, next to your profile Name or simply click on this link.

I hope that answers your concern adequately. Let me know!
