HP ENVY 4520 All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 11

When I send a print job requiring "color" from my laptop, the printer only prints in black. Does this mean my printer should be replaced? All updates to both the laptop and  the printer are current, and the printer prints in color when I tell it to print a test page.

Hi @Bubblerb0b62,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding your printer!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Try these steps:

Check Printer Settings

  • Default Print Settings:
    • Go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers on your Windows 11 laptop.
    • Right-click on your HP ENVY 4520 and select Printing Preferences.
    • Make sure that the option to print in color is selected under the Paper/Quality or Color tab.

Driver Reinstallation

  • Reinstall Driver:
    • Uninstall the current printer driver. In Devices and Printers, right-click on the HP ENVY 4520 and select Remove device.
    • Download and install the latest driver from the HP Support page.

Application Settings

  • Software or Application Setting:
    • Check the print settings in the application you are using to print (e.g., Word, Adobe Reader).
    • Make sure the print setting is not set to print in grayscale or black & white.

HP Print and Scan Doctor

  • Run Diagnostic Tool:
    • Download and run the HP Print and Scan Doctor. This tool can automatically diagnose and resolve printer configuration issues.

Check Color Cartridge

  • Ensure the color ink cartridges have ink left. Run a print quality diagnostic report from the printer’s control panel to verify the status of the color cartridges.

Firmware Update

  • Firmware Check:
    • Verify that your printer's firmware is up to date, as sometimes older firmware might not handle newer print jobs properly.

I hope this helps.
