Hi,
Apologies for jumping in.
What is your exact printer model? is it an HP Officejet 6500A or a 6500A plus printer?
The HP Officejet 6500a (E710a) offers USB and Ethernet wired connectivity, the HP Officejet 6500a Plus (E710) also offers wireless capabilities, you may check its Connectivity specifications below:

HP Deskjet 6500A…..
I know it is supposed to have wireless capacity but I can’t find out how it works.
it only seems to work if I have a cable to the modem.
I need to move the printer and it won’t have that physical connection, so I need it to work wirelessly….

It does not have any wireless capabilities and therefore you cannot find any such option, it can only connected with a cable to a router, not wirelessly… The 6500A Plus model offers wireless connectivity, not your printer.
