I need to understand the network topology required for an HP Envy wireless printer.  I have a wired network, but my laptop has wi-fi capability.  I had to add a wi-fi AP to connect to my printer, but it refuses to scan because my laptop and printer are on different networks.  How do I get my printer to scan?  Right now it is:

cable modem --wire--router--wire--600 foot bridge--switch

switch--wire--win 10 laptop

switch--wire--wi-fi AP--wireless connection--HP Envy

switch--wire--other win 10 desktop

I also have a USB connection between my laptop and the HP Envy, but all that can do is print.  There is just one switch in the system, in case that is confusing.

Hi @GGrotke,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

I'd like to help!

To be able to answer you effectively, we need some information

Are you connecting the printer to a 2.4Ghz network or 5Ghz network?

The printers work only on 2.4ghz and make sure both PC and printer are on the same network.

May I have the exact product name and number? Refer to this document for steps to find the product details. Do not share any of your personal information such as serial, phone number, email ID, etc.

Meanwhile, you may follow the steps from this document here and see how it goes.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.

It's an HP Envy printer 6458e.  My wi-fi AP is a tp-link router at 2.4 GHz, about three feet from my printer.  My computer was on a switch for a wired ethernet network, so to connect the printer I had to get a cheap tp-link N AP.  Then I could print via HP-Smart.  But I couldn't scan.  I got the error message that my computer and printer were not on the same network.  To correct that, I unplugged my laptop ethernet cable.  Then it scanned fine.  BUT my laptop's internet speed dropped from over 90 Mbps to about 12 Mbps with wi-fi through the AP.  When I connected the ethernet cable again, it went back up to 90+ Mbps, but the printer would no longer scan.  This is because it disconnected the wi-fi connection automatically.  I suspect that is because then the laptop would have been connected to the switch directly and through the tp-link AP.  Probably a loop-avoidance so the laptop would not get the same packet through both interfaces.  My half-assed solution is to just unplug the laptop ethernet cable when I (rarely) want to scan.  So really, it is not a printer hardware problem, but rather a problem with the printer's wireless-only interface limitations.
