Just moved so have a new router. Went through the steps to get to Wireless Setup mode. Then tried to continue connecting with HP App but says can't find my printer. What am I doing wrong?

Hi @KSinWA,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

This is a common issue after moving to a new network. Your printer needs to be reconnected to the new Wi-Fi, and the HP Smart app must detect it on the same network. Let’s fix this step by step:

Why can’t HP App find Your Printer

  • Printer is not fully in Wireless Setup Mode.
  • Printer and device are on different networks (e.g., 2.4 GHz vs 5 GHz).
  • Firewall/VPN blocking HP Smart Discovery.
  • The printer still remembers the old network and needs a reset.

Step 1: Confirm Wireless Setup Mode

  • On most HP printers:
    • Press and hold the Wireless button for 5 seconds (or until the light blinks).
    • OR go to Setup > Network Settings > Restore Network Defaults.
  • The wireless light should blink, meaning it’s in setup mode.

Step 2: Connect via HP App

  1. Make sure your phone/computer is on the same Wi-Fi you want the printer to use.
  2. Open HP App.
  3. Tap Add Printer → Select your printer.
    • If not found, tap Set Up a New Printer.
  4. Follow prompts to enter Wi-Fi credentials.

Step 3: If the Printer Still Isn’t Found

  • Temporarily disable VPN or firewall.
  • Move the printer closer to the router.
  • Restart the printer and device.
  • If still no luck, reset the printer network settings
    • Setup > Network > Restore Network Defaults.
    • Then retry the HP App setup.
