5101 HP Smart tank
Microsoft Windows 11

Hello! So I recently got a new printer. I've been trying to set it up for a few weeks now but have had no luck. I use the HP Smart app to add a new printer and get it connected to the Wi-Fi and my computer, however it refuses to finish connecting. It successfully finds the printer, configures it, connects it to the Wi-Fi network, but stops on the last step of connecting the printer to the computer. The wifi here is pretty good and the Wi-Fi button on the printer isn't flashing to show that it has a weak signal. I live in an apartment complex with shared Wi-Fi so I can't connect it directly to the router. I've tried searching it up with the IP address without any results. I've also tried wifi direct with no luck. My phone disconnects as soon as I connect it to my printer.

Hi @Sambug1618

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you're having a bit of a tricky time getting your new printer connected, especially with the shared Wi-Fi situation and issues with the final connection steps. Let’s troubleshoot and see if we can find a solution for you. I'll guide you through a few steps that might help resolve the issue.

1. Check Printer Compatibility with Shared Wi-Fi

  • Wi-Fi Network Type: Sometimes, shared Wi-Fi networks (like those in apartment complexes) can have certain security measures in place (like a captive portal) that may block devices like printers from connecting properly. If your printer is unable to connect due to the network configuration, you might need to contact your ISP (Internet Service Provider) or check your router settings to make sure that the network isn't blocking your printer.
  • Dual-band Routers: If your router supports both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands, make sure your printer is connected to the 2.4 GHz band, as many printers don’t support the 5 GHz band. You can either disable the 5 GHz band temporarily or configure the printer to connect to the 2.4 GHz band during setup.

2. Reboot All Devices

  • Restart your printer, computer, and router to ensure that there aren’t any temporary connection issues or conflicts.
  • Reboot your phone if you’re using it to connect or control the printer via the HP Smart app.

3. Use WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup)

If your router supports WPS, this can sometimes be an easier way to connect a printer to Wi-Fi:

  1. On the printer, locate the Wi-Fi button (look for a small wireless symbol).
  2. Press and hold the Wi-Fi button on the printer for about 5-10 seconds to put it into WPS mode.
  3. Within 2 minutes, press the WPS button on your router.
  4. Wait for the printer to connect to the network. The printer should display a solid Wi-Fi light once it's connected.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
