Hi @StevensNotary,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
To set up your HP LaserJet Pro M404dw printer wirelessly and encounter a prompt for a custom password, follow these steps to locate or reset the password.
Default Password:
- For many HP printers, the default password is either 12345678 or 00000000. If this is the first time you're setting up the printer, try using one of these passwords.
Check the Printer’s Network Settings:
- On the Printer:
- Access the Control Panel: Go to the printer's control panel.
- Navigate to Network Settings: Go to Setup > Network > Wireless Settings.
- Find Password Information: You might see options related to the wireless network settings, including any security keys or passwords that have been set.
Access the Printer’s Embedded Web Server (EWS):
- From a Computer or Mobile Device:
- Find the Printer’s IP Address: Print a network configuration page from the printer’s control panel by navigating to Setup > Reports > Network Configuration Page.
- Enter the IP Address: Open a web browser and type the printer’s IP address in the address bar.
- Log In to EWS: Log in using the default or previously set administrator password (often admin with no password).
- Check Wireless Settings: Look for the Wireless or Network tab to find or reset the wireless settings, including the password.
Reset to Factory Defaults:
- On the Printer:
- Navigate to Setup: Go to Setup > Service > Restore Defaults.
- Reset Network Settings: Confirm the reset to restore the default settings, which may include the default password.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
