Hi @Jeremym9,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand the DNS issue you're encountering with your HP OfficeJet 5740 E-All-In-One Printer can often be resolved by reconfiguring the network settings.

Here are some steps to troubleshoot and resolve the issue:

Step 1: Restart Printer and Router

  1. Power off the printer and then turn it back on after a few seconds.
  2. Restart your router by unplugging it, waiting for about 30 seconds, and plugging it back in.

Step 2: Check Network Connection

  1. Ensure that the printer is connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your PC.
  2. On the printer's control panel, navigate to Wireless Settings and verify that it is connected to your Wi-Fi network.

Step 3: Reconfigure DNS Settings

  1. Access the printer's network settings:
    • On the printer control panel, go to Setup (usually represented by a wrench or gear icon).
    • Navigate to Network or Wireless Settings.
  2. Manually set the DNS server:
    • Select Advanced Settings or IP Settings.
    • Change DNS Server settings from automatic to manual.
    • Enter the following DNS addresses:
      • Preferred DNS server: 8.8.8.8 (Google's public DNS)
      • Alternate DNS server: 8.8.4.4 (Google's public DNS)
  3. Save the settings and restart the printer.

Step 4: Update Printer Firmware Update the firmware on an HP printer

  1. Check for firmware updates for your printer model:
    • Go to the HP support website.
    • Enter your printer model (HP OfficeJet 5740).
    • Download and install the latest firmware update if available.

Step 5: Reset Network Settings on Printer

  1. Reset the printer's network settings to factory defaults:
    • On the printer's control panel, go to Setup > Network Settings > Restore Network Settings.
    • Confirm the reset and then reconnect the printer to your Wi-Fi network.

Step 6: Verify and Configure Router Settings

  1. Log in to your router’s web interface:
    • Open a web browser on your PC.
    • Enter the router’s IP address (commonly 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1) in the address bar.
    • Enter the username and password to log in.
  2. Check DNS settings on the router:
    • Ensure that the DNS settings on your router are correctly configured and not blocking the printer’s connection.
    • You can set the DNS servers on the router to 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 if they are not already set.

Step 7: Assign Static IP Address to Printer

  1. Assign a static IP address to the printer to avoid conflicts:
    • On the printer control panel, go to Setup > Network > Advanced Settings > IP Settings.
    • Set a static IP address within the range of your router but outside of the DHCP range.

Step 8: Re-add Printer to PC

  1. Remove and re-add the printer on your PC:
    • Go to Settings > Devices > Printers & Scanners.
    • Remove the HP OfficeJet 5740 from the list.
    • Click on Add a printer or scanner and follow the prompts to re-add it.

Hi Gaya1239,

I tried steps 1-3 and they did not work: restart printer and router; ensure same wifi network, manually enter DNS.  The scan shows as completed on the printer but does not show up in my email.

For what it's worth, printing wirelessly to the printer works.
