HP ENVY 6420e All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 10 (32-bit)

I have a new wifi setup due to NBN upgrade, my HP Envy 6400e now shows up in my wifi connection on my laptop that I do not want on there. When i try to re connect my printer to the new wifi, as it proceeds past the first stage it disconnects my internet wifi and then connects the printer direct wifi printer, which is not what i want and is also concerning as it is not showing as a secure connection.

I just want to be able to set up my printer as it was as a wireless printer over the home wifi and def not via direct wifi.

And i really want that printer wifi connection off the dropdown list of wifi connections please.

I have tried everything from laptop resets to printer resets and unplugging, printing the guide on which buttons to press to stop direct wifi but it just keeps appearing. please help.

Hi @Rik6400e,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

To resolve the issue of your HP Envy 6400e printer showing up in your Wi-Fi connections and to ensure that it connects only via your home Wi-Fi network (and not via Direct Wi-Fi), follow these steps:

1. Disable HP Direct Wi-Fi

HP printers with wireless capabilities can often be connected via Direct Wi-Fi, which can appear as a separate network. To disable HP Direct Wi-Fi on your HP Envy 6400e printer:

Turn on the Printer: Make sure your printer is powered on.

Access Wireless Settings:

  • On the printer’s control panel, find and press the Wireless or Wi-Fi icon.

Navigate to Wi-Fi Direct:

  • Look for Wi-Fi Direct settings. This is often found under Wireless Settings or a similar menu.

Disable Wi-Fi Direct:

  • Select Wi-Fi Direct and choose the option to turn it Off or Disable. This prevents the printer from broadcasting a separate Direct Wi-Fi network.

2. Reconnect to Your Home Wi-Fi Network

Access Wireless Setup:

  • On the printer’s control panel, navigate to Wireless Setup or Network Setup.

Select Your Home Network:

  • Choose Wireless Setup Wizard or similar option to search for available networks.

Choose Your Home Wi-Fi Network:

  • Find and select your home Wi-Fi network from the list. Enter the Wi-Fi password if prompted.

Confirm Connection:

  • Ensure that the printer connects successfully to your home network. It should now be using your home Wi-Fi and not the Direct Wi-Fi.

3. Remove Printer from Wi-Fi Connection List on Your Laptop

Open Wi-Fi Settings on Your Laptop:

  • Go to Settings > Network & Internet > Wi-Fi (Windows) or System Preferences > Network (Mac).

Forget the Printer’s Direct Wi-Fi Network:

  • Find the HP Direct Wi-Fi network from the list of available networks. Right-click (Windows) or select (Mac) and choose Forget or Remove.

Reconnect to Your Home Wi-Fi Network:

  • Make sure your laptop is connected to your home Wi-Fi network.

4. Check Printer Settings Through the HP Smart App

  • Download and open the HP Smart app on your computer or mobile device.
  • If your printer is not already added, select Add Printer and follow the prompts to connect it to your home Wi-Fi network.
  • Navigate to Printer Settings and ensure that it is set to connect via your home Wi-Fi and not Wi-Fi Direct.

5. Update Printer Firmware

  • Visit HP’s support website and check if there are any firmware updates available for your printer model.
  • Follow the instructions to download and install the latest firmware, which can sometimes resolve connectivity issues.

6. Factory Reset Printer (If Needed)

Perform a Factory Reset:

  • If the above steps do not resolve the issue, consider performing a factory reset on the printer. This will reset all settings to default and should help with any persistent connectivity issues.
  • Refer to the printer’s user manual or HP Support for instructions on how to perform a factory reset.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
