Microsoft Windows 11

I am having a problem during the software install.  The printer is on the same network as the computer.  During install the IP address is not accepted and states it is an "auto IP" address and is temporary and wait a few minutes for a valid IP Address but a valid IP address never comes through.  How do I move past this to finish the software install?

@Sundancer2025, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
We understand that you're stuck at the part of the HP printer installation where the software rejects the Auto-IP address (usually something like 169.254.x.x) because it's not a real network IP. This happens because the printer isn't properly connected to your network, even though it may appear connected.
Here’s how you can fix it:

Connect the printer to Wi-Fi manually (before installing the software)

On the printer's control panel:

  • Navigate to Network Settings or Wireless Settings.
  • Select Wireless Setup Wizard.
  • Follow the prompts to choose your Wi-Fi network.
  • Carefully input your Wi-Fi password.
  • The printer should then obtain a valid IP address like 192.168.x.x or 10.0.x.x.

If your printer lacks a screen, use Wi-Fi Direct or WPS methods:

  • Wi-Fi Direct: Temporarily connect the printer to your PC using its Wi-Fi Direct network to complete the setup.
  • WPS Push Button: Press the WPS button on your router, then within 2 minutes, press the Wireless button on the printer.

Verify if it has a valid IP address

Print a Network Configuration Page from the printer:

  • Press and hold the wireless button and the information (i) button together (this may vary by model).
  • Check under IP Address.
  • If it still shows 169.254.x.x, the printer is not connected to the network.

If the issue persists: Reset the printer's network settings

Reset the network settings:

  • Go to Network SettingsRestore Network Defaults on the printer.
  • After the reset, run the Wireless Setup Wizard again to reconnect to Wi-Fi properly.

Once connected: Restart the software installation

Now that the printer has a valid IP address (for example, 192.168.1.100), run the HP installer again.

  • It should automatically recognize the printer on the network without requiring manual IP input.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
