ENVY 5530
Microsoft Windows 10 (32-bit)

Have a 5 or so year old ENVY 5530 all-in-one for home printing.  Up until very recently all was well with it and was happily either refilling ink cartridges with ink, or buying a remanufactured cartridge when the refill process was less than desirable.  The current set of black and color cartridges were both working fine until now.  The printer says the color cartridge isn't compatible and the black cartridge is out of ink.  Neither condition is actually true as it prints functions from the screen just fine, but won't print if I send a print from my laptop.  It's seem a bit odd and seems to coincide with when I bought a new printer for another location and enrolled it in instant ink.  Can anyone help?

Hi Jay,

Thanks for tips and walk through instructions. I followed them. Turned out to be a faulty remanufactured cartridge. They sent a replacement, no charge. Installed the new one and all is well. Appreciate the assist.

Hi @reactordude,

I'd like to help!

Update the printer firmware-

Download available firmware updates from the HP website

With the printer on and connected to the computer, go to HP Customer Support - Software and Driver Downloads, and then identify your printer. Look for and install any available firmware updates. Refer to the document HP Printers - Updating or Upgrading Printer Firmware

The third-party ink cartridges will work. But there are many cartridges in the market which are refilled and sometimes the chip is not configured to work with the printer. You need to contact the cartridge manufacturer and find out why it's not working. Try a different cartridge supplier and check if that works.

Hope this helps!

I have a similar problem.  My HP envy printer 5530 was working fine.  There is now an error message that says ink "cartridge problem. The following ink cartridge must be replaced (Pink dot). "

Here is what I have done to resolve issue:

unplugged printer and held the on button for 30 seconds to clear charge

replaced color ink cartridge with new instant ink cartridge (the only ones I have ever used in this printer)

cleaned the contacts inside printer and on cartridge

updated the firmware

Can someone please help me with next steps?  I really appreciate it.
