Common problems for Connectivity Issues
We would like to share some of the most frequently asked questions about Printer Wi-Fi, Connectivity Issues and Offline Status. Check out this link: HP printer is offline or unavailable.

A couple of weeks ago, my Envy 6032 stopped printing.  I use a desktop computer and have used a wired connection because I never managed to get the printer connected to the wifi.  The i is permanently orange with 0 .  As the cartridges are genuine and new and the info sheet prints fine, I do not think it is a cartridge issue.

I am on Linux Debian and have removed and reinstalled the printer drivers (hplip and cups) using the command line, but it has made no difference.  I have the pdf manual downloaded, and have noticed that the buttons do not work as the manual says they should.  I have tried all the methods of connecting.  The Smart app does not find the printer.  Trying to connect by putting in the isp does not work - does the printer have a separate isp?  If so where do I find it?  Does it have its own password?

But why did it work fine using the wired connection for about 2 years, and then stop all of a sudden?  I just want to print!

Hello,

I’m going to be very direct and structured here, because you’re mixing three different concepts (USB, Wi-Fi, and HP Smart), and the HP Envy 6032 has some design limitations that explain exactly why this worked for two years and then suddenly stopped.

You are not doing anything wrong, and this is not a Linux-specific mistake.

First: clear up the biggest misunderstanding (very important)

The HP Envy 6032 does NOT support “wired” networking

There is no Ethernet (LAN) port on this printer.

What you have been using for two years is:
➡️ USB printing, not wired networking.

That distinction matters, because:

  • USB printing does not rely on Wi-Fi, IP addresses, or passwords

  • Wi-Fi printing does

  • HP Smart is not required for USB printing

So forget Wi-Fi for a moment — your problem exists before networking.

What the orange “i” + 0 actually means on Envy 6032

On the Envy 6000 series:

  • Solid orange i + 0 is a generic hardware / state error

  • It is NOT a cartridge error if:

    • Info page prints fine

    • Genuine cartridges installed

  • It indicates the printer is stuck in an invalid internal mode

This commonly happens after:

  • Firmware auto-update

  • USB enumeration failure

  • Power interruption during sleep

  • Corrupt internal state (NVRAM)

This is why:

  • Buttons don’t behave as the manual says

  • HP Smart can’t find it

  • USB printing suddenly stopped after years

Why Linux changes are not helping

You already proved this is not a driver issue:

  • HPLIP reinstalled ✔

  • CUPS reinstalled ✔

  • Printer test/info page prints ✔

That means:
➡️ Linux is fine
➡️ CUPS is fine
➡️ USB stack is fine

The printer itself is not accepting print jobs.

There is NO “ISP” in the printer

You asked this, so let me be explicit:

  • The printer does not have an ISP

  • It does not have a separate password

  • It does not have an IP address unless it is on Wi-Fi

  • USB printing does not use IP at all

So anything asking you for an IP or ISP is irrelevant to your setup.

Why HP Smart cannot find it

Two reasons:

  1. HP Smart on Linux is limited and unreliable

  2. Your printer is not in a valid setup or idle state

HP Smart is not required for USB printing and should be ignored here.

The fix: full hardware state reset (this is the key)

This model does not have a menu, so button timing matters.

STEP 1 – Hard reset (do exactly)

  1. Power ON the printer

  2. Remove both cartridges

  3. Close the cartridge door

  4. Unplug the power cable from the back

  5. Wait 90 seconds

  6. Plug power back in

  7. Power ON

  8. When prompted, reinstall both cartridges

This clears stuck cartridge + firmware state.

STEP 2 – Force printer out of error mode

  1. With printer ON

  2. Press and hold:

    • Cancel (X) + Black Copy

  3. Hold for 5 seconds

  4. Release

If successful:

  • The orange i should turn off or blink briefly

  • Printer should go to idle

STEP 3 – Test USB printing WITHOUT HPLIP

This is important for isolation.

From Linux:

lpstat -t

Then:

lp /etc/hosts

If this prints:
➡️ Problem is resolved
If it does not:
➡️ Printer is still internally locked

If the orange “i + 0” stays ON after reset

Then I’ll be blunt (mentor honesty):

This is a known firmware lockup on Envy 6000 series printers.

HP does not provide:

  • Firmware downgrade

  • Manual recovery

  • Hardware reset pins

Supported outcome:

  • Under warranty → HP replaces the printer

  • Out of warranty → replacement is cheaper than repair

There is no Linux, Windows, or macOS fix at that point.

Why it worked for 2 years and then didn’t

Because:

  • USB printing bypasses network checks

  • Firmware updates are automatic

  • Eventually one update or power event corrupted the internal state

This is sadly common on Envy models.
