I get error 71.02.4A on my hp office jet 8010 all in one printer. I have turned the printer off countless times.  When I open the compartment to the cartridges, the carrier does not automatically slide back to center.  I cannot reach the print cartridges without damaging the carrier.  What do I do at this point?

Hi @RWALIA011,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

Error 71.02.4A on an HP OfficeJet 8010 all-in-one printer typically indicates a problem with the ink cartridge carriage. Since the carriage does not automatically slide back to the center when you open the compartment, it suggests there might be a mechanical issue preventing the carriage from moving correctly. Here are some steps you can try to troubleshoot and resolve the issue.

  • Power Cycle: Make sure to turn off the printer, unplug it from the power source, and wait for a few minutes. Then, plug it back in and power it on. This will reset the printer's internal components and may resolve any temporary glitches.
  • Check for Obstructions: Open the printer's cartridge compartment again and inspect it for any obstructions. Sometimes, a small piece of paper or debris can get stuck, hindering the carriage's movement. Carefully remove any obstacles you find.
  • Manually Move the Carriage: If the carriage is stuck in a specific position, try gently moving it by hand. Turn off the printer, then move the carriage to the center by carefully sliding it along the carriage path. Ensure that it moves freely without any resistance or getting stuck.
  • Inspect Ink Cartridges: Check the ink cartridges to ensure they are correctly installed and not causing any obstruction in the carriage's movement. If any of the cartridges seem damaged or incorrectly placed, reseat or replace them as needed.
  • Clean the Carriage Path: Dust and debris can accumulate on the carriage path over time, leading to mechanical issues. Use a soft, lint-free cloth to clean the carriage path and surrounding area.
  • Update Firmware: Sometimes, firmware updates from HP can address known issues and bugs. Check the HP website for any available firmware updates for your specific printer model and install them following the provided instructions.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
