I have an HP OfficeJet 3830 and just recently I’ve been getting the error message “Failed to contact Printer”. The printer shows up on my network settings but when I click on the information icon it wants a password and it tries to take over my Wi fi connection.

Hi @Cindy53098,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I understand you are encountering the "Failed to contact Printer" error on your HP OfficeJet 3830. Here's a step-by-step guide to troubleshoot and resolve the issue:

Check Printer Connectivity:

  • Ensure that your printer is powered on and connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your computer or device.

  • Make sure the Wi-Fi is enabled on the printer. Reconnect the printer to the Wi-Fi network if necessary.

Verify Network Connection:

  • Use your printer's control panel to print a Network Configuration Page. This will display your printer's IP address and confirm it’s connected to the correct network.

  • Ensure there are no issues with your Wi-Fi network, such as a weak signal or network congestion.

Restart Devices:

  • Restart your printer, computer, and network router to reset the connections.

  • Sometimes, power cycling the printer and network equipment can resolve intermittent connectivity problems.

Check Printer Status:

  • In the browser, go to the IP address of the printer, which you can find on the Network Configuration Page printed earlier. This should take you to the HP Embedded Web Server.

  • Enter credentials if prompted. The default username might be "admin", and you might need to set or reset the password if you haven't done it before.

Printer Driver and Software:

  • Update or reinstall the printer drivers on your computer. Obtain the latest drivers from the official HP website here.

  • Ensure you have the latest firmware for your printer. This can be updated through the HP Smart app or directly via the Embedded Web Server.

Fix Default Printer Settings:

  • Ensure your HP OfficeJet 3830 is set as the default printer on your computer. This can be done through the Printers & Scanners settings in your computer’s control panel.

Firewall and Security Software:

  • Check if your firewall or antivirus software is blocking the printer connection. Add an exception for the printer software in your firewall settings.

Troubleshoot via HP Smart App:

  • Use the HP Smart app on a mobile device for additional troubleshooting. The app can provide specific error codes and potential solutions.

Wi-Fi Direct Mode:

  • If you experience issues with the network, try using Wi-Fi Direct to print. This method bypasses your router and connects devices directly.

I hope this will help.

Take care and have a good day.

I'm an HP Employee.
