Common problems for Connectivity Issues
We would like to share some of the most frequently asked questions about Printer Wi-Fi, Connectivity Issues and Offline Status. Check out this link: HP printer is offline or unavailable.

I have an Office Jet Pro 9010 series and am getting  “Failure to contact printer”. I am on Apple OS. On computer and phones HP app it shows levels of ink etc. when I try to print the print button is gray and won’t go to blue. I then get the failure to connect message. Have turned off printer and various devices all on same wifi and no change. What do I do?  This just started happening.

Hi @Jbeesa

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Thank you for sharing the details. Since your OfficeJet Pro 9010 series printer is showing ink levels in the HP App but not allowing printing, it indicates the printer is visible on the network but the communication for print jobs is not completing.

Let’s go step by step to restore proper connectivity on macOS:

Verify Printer Status in HP App

  • Open the HP App on your Mac.
  • Confirm the printer shows as “Ready.” If it shows “Offline,” proceed to the next steps.

Check Wi-Fi Connection

  • Ensure the printer and Mac are connected to the same Wi-Fi network (same SSID).
  • On the printer’s control panel, go to Wireless Settings > Network Setup > Wireless Status to confirm connection.

Restart Print System on Mac

  • On your Mac, go to System Settings > Printers & Scanners.
  • Right-click (or Control-click) in the printer list and choose Reset Printing System.
  • Re-add the printer by selecting Add Printer, then choose your OfficeJet Pro 9010 from the list.

Reinstall Printer in HP App

  • In the HP App, remove the printer.
  • Add it again by selecting Set up a new printer and follow the prompts.
  • This refreshes the communication between the app and the printer.

Check for AirPrint Availability

  • When adding the printer, ensure it is listed as an AirPrint device.
  • If AirPrint is not available, select the printer’s IP address manually.

Power Cycle Devices

  • Turn off the printer, router, and Mac.
  • Wait 30 seconds, then power them back on in this order: router → printer → Mac.
  • This clears any temporary communication blocks.

Test Printing

  • Open a document and select File > Print.
  • Ensure the printer name is selected correctly. The print button should now be active.

Your printer is connected to the network but the Mac’s print system is not communicating properly. Resetting the print system, re-adding the printer in both macOS and the HP App, and ensuring AirPrint is active should resolve the “Failure to contact printer” message.

This is frustrating because a couple hours ago I went to print and wasn’t connected. It also didn’t show a status on the app as far as ready or offline. So decided to tackle it now and app said is was sleeping. Did a test print and it worked perfectly. It has been this way off and on at different times and sometimes different devices working and then not working. Any suggestions?

I understand the situation clearly—your printer is intermittently connecting, sometimes showing as “sleeping” or not ready, and at other times working fine. Since the HP App can display ink levels, the printer is visible on the network, but the communication for print jobs is inconsistent. Let’s focus on stabilizing that connection.

Here are structured steps you can follow:

1. Confirm Printer Status

  • On the printer’s control panel, check if it is in “Ready” mode.
  • If it shows “Sleeping,” wake it by pressing any button on the control panel.

2. Refresh the Print System on macOS

  • Go to System Settings > Printers & Scanners.
  • Remove the OfficeJet Pro 9010 from the list.
  • Add it again, ensuring it appears as an AirPrint device. If AirPrint is not listed, add it using the printer’s IP address.

3. Re-add in HP App

  • In the HP App, remove the printer.
  • Add it back by selecting Set up a new printer and follow the prompts. This refreshes the communication path.

4. Network Check

  • Ensure both printer and Mac are connected to the same Wi-Fi SSID.
  • On the printer’s control panel, navigate to Wireless Settings > Network Setup > Wireless Status to confirm connection strength.

5. Power Cycle Sequence

  • Turn off the router, printer, and Mac.
  • Wait 30 seconds.
  • Power them back on in this order: router → printer → Mac.
  • This clears temporary blocks and re-establishes communication.

6. Test Across Devices

  • Try printing from both your Mac and a phone using the HP App.
  • If one device works and another doesn’t, re-add the printer on the device that fails.

7. Keep Printer Awake

  • If the issue recurs when the printer is “sleeping,” adjust the printer’s Sleep Mode settings from the control panel to extend the time before it goes to sleep.

By resetting the print system, re-adding the printer in both macOS and the HP App, and ensuring AirPrint is active, you should see more consistent connectivity. If the issue happens intermittently, it often points to Wi-Fi communication drops, so keeping the printer closer to the router or ensuring a stable signal can help.
