Hi @Kamalchand1988=,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand your HP LaserJet Pro MFP M126nw shows a “Fatal Error – Install Operation Took Too Long” when trying to run the Wi-Fi setup. Let’s go through a few steps to check what could be causing this.

Remove Old HP Installers and Background Services

Open Control Panel → Programs → Uninstall a program and remove anything starting with “HP LaserJet” or “HP Smart Install.”

Restart the PC and retry the Wi-Fi setup using the newest full-feature package.

Disable HP Smart Install on the Printer (Very Important for M126nw)

On the printer panel, go to Setup → Service → HP Smart Install → Off.

This model’s Smart Install can interfere with modern Windows 10/11 Wi-Fi setup.

Use Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS) Instead of USB Setup

Press and hold the Wireless button on the printer for 3 seconds until the light blinks.

Within 2 minutes, press the WPS button on your router.

Wait for the wireless light to stay solid; then run the installer again (it will detect the printer automatically).

Connect to the Printer’s Direct Wi-Fi for Setup

On the printer, enable Wi-Fi Direct (Wireless + Wi-Fi Direct button).

On your PC, connect to the network called DIRECT-xx-M126nw.

Run the setup and select “Convert USB/Wi-Fi Direct to Wireless Network.”

Assign a Manual 2.4 GHz Channel on the Router

The M126nw supports 2.4 GHz only.

Set your router to channels 1, 6, or 11 (Auto sometimes causes the setup to freeze).

Retry the setup after changing the channel.

Check Firewall or Antivirus Blocking the Installer

Temporarily disable Windows Firewall/Defender or any third-party antivirus.

Some security software blocks the network discovery step, causing the “fatal error.”

Try Setup From a Different Device

If available, run the Wi-Fi setup from a different laptop/PC on the same network.

If the setup works there, it means your primary PC is blocking the installer.

Verify Printer Has the Latest Firmware

Connect the printer via USB.

Use the HP Firmware Update Utility from the support page.

Updated firmware often fixes Wi-Fi setup timeouts.

I hope this helps.
