HP OfficeJet Pro 8139e All-in-One Printer

Hi all,

My printer is stuck in a failed firmware update loop. It doesn't let me turn off the WiFi after it fails because the touch panel stops working just as I open the settings page.

I've tried to update it with a USB drive but it still boots into a failed firmware update loop again. I've tried to unplug it for 60+ seconds to attempt to turn off network access but the touch panel always seizes to work on the settings screen right into another restart.

When it restarts, it "starts downloading" a Firmware Update but about 20% into the bar, it restarts itself and says "The firmware update has failed to download... due to bad connection" or something like that.

Hi @yubicle

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query.

I understand that you have already tried power cycling, disabling network access, and performing a firmware update using a USB drive.

Based on the symptoms, the HP OfficeJet Pro 8139e appears to be caught in a firmware update/recovery loop. The printer begins downloading the firmware, reaches approximately 20%, restarts, and then reports that the firmware update failed because of a connection issue. Since the touchscreen also becomes unresponsive when you try to access Settings, it may not be possible to disable Wi-Fi through the printer's control panel.

Because you have already attempted the USB firmware update without resolving the loop, I would avoid repeatedly interrupting the printer while it is attempting to update. A factory reset may restore the printer's settings, but it is not generally expected to repair an incomplete or corrupted firmware installation.

Update firmware using HP App (Windows 11)

  • Install  HP App from https://www.hp.com/us-en/hp-app/overview.html
  • Open HP App
  • Add the OfficeJet Pro 8139e.
  • Go to:
    Printer Settings >Advanced Settings
  • Open:
    Tools > Printer Updates
  • Select:
    Check Now
  • Install any available firmware update.
  • Restart the printer afterward.

Reset network settings

If Ethernet firmware updates fail:

  • On the printer touchscreen:
Setup > Network Setup > Restore Network Settings
  • Confirm the reset.
  • Restart the printer.
  • Connect Ethernet again.
  • Allow the printer to obtain a new IP address.

Hope this helps, Please revert if the issue persists.

Take care and have an amazing day!

I'm an HP Employee.
