Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I will try to be brief. I am currently trying to set up a couple of  HP LaserJet Pro 4001n printers.

The last 3 printers I have had to install (at school site) have required me to log in and register the printer on HP. I can not have a work/school printer assigned to me as it is not mine to control or "own". Also when USB connection is used (in places with no active network ports), it will not print, but request it be connected to a LAN or Wifi. How do I get these setup without all the hoops and roadblocks that suddenly have become required. I have to connect to network, get IP, register the IP, gather drivers and place on print server for the sites. This way any teacher or student laptop can connect with the printer via the print server interface.

So my needs are this:

1 Get past the "required" registration, so I can capture the IP for the above steps.

2. Get to run on USB only and quit asking to be connected to a network (when needed)

Thank you for any assistance you can provide.

Using a USB connection to set up the printer

Follow these steps to set up the printer using a USB connection.

  1. Press the Power button to turn on the printer. A web site address (or URL) will display on the printer control panel.

  2. Press the right arrow

on the control panel to select Language and Country/Region.

  3. The control panel will prompt you to go to hpsmart.com/setup.

  4. Connect the USB cable and follow the onscreen instructions to download the software.

  5. When the "Choose a printer" screen displays in the HP Easy Start software, select the printer you are setting up (it should say “USB Connected”).

     NOTE:

If HP Easy Start finds a printer, select the Printer Not Shown button. This will bring you to the “Choose a printer” screen.

  6. Select USB Cable.

  7. Select Continue.

  8. Select Basic Drivers.

  9. Select No Thanks or Yes for Application Analytics.

     NOTE:

If prompted to select a printer to install on the network, click My device is not listed, and then click Next. If prompted to connect an Ethernet cable, click Cancel.

  10. When the "Connection Options" screen displays, select the radio button next to USB, and then click Next.

  11. When the "Setup Complete" screen displays, click Finish.

  12. On the printer control panel, press the X (Cancel) button twice.

The printer is ready to use.

Hope that helps!
