Hello – I have two different printers and somehow have messed up the embedded Web server username and password. Does anyone have input on how to correct this? Thank you very much

Hi @JGRN99

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I’m sorry to hear about the trouble you’re facing, getting locked out of your printer’s Embedded Web Server (EWS) can feel daunting, especially when you manage two devices. But let’s sort this out together 😊.

Here are clear, step-by-step methods to restore access and reset your EWS password:

1. Factory‑Reset Network Settings via Printer Control Panel

Most HP Ink‑Jet and Ink‑Tank printers allow a quick reset of network (and EWS) settings:

  1. With the printer powered on, press and hold both the Cancel (X) and Wireless buttons simultaneously.
  2. Hold for about 5 seconds, then release.
  3. The printer should restart, restoring network defaults and clearing any custom EWS username/password.

Once done:

  • Print a Network Configuration Page (typically via the Wireless or Info button), find your printer’s IP.
  • Visit the embedded web interface by typing http://<printer_IP> into a browser.
  • For login: Try clearing both username and password, and if prompted, use:
    • Username: admin
    • Password: leave blank.

2. Full EWS Reset for LaserJet Series (e.g., M402n)

Specific HP LaserJet models use a hardware keypress reset:

  1. Turn off the printer.
  2. Press and hold the Right Arrow + Cancel buttons.
  3. Power the printer back on, continuing to hold the keys.
  4. Release when the display shows “Initializing…”.

This wipes all EWS settings, including the password, so you'll need to reconfigure any saved network or security settings afterward.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
