I recently bought this printer and just went into the menu to change some configuration settings. It's asking me for a user name and password. This is the first I've heard of this. I never set one up for a printer (thought I have an account with HP) and I see no instructions in the User's Manual about this or how to set this up. So how do I? Where do I have to go to find out?

On this series of printers the default user name is admin. It is looking for a pin code. Open the toner cartridge access door and there should be an 8 digit pin code on the right side of the toner cartridge carrier.

Thank you so much, Repairatrooper. HP wanted to charge me $25 for that piece of information. I tried that but the printer said my username/password were invalid. I never reset this when I set the printer up so I don't know what the problem could have been. At any rate I was able to find out how to reset the printer to factory defaults and when I tried to sign in again I was successful. I had another question, if you don't mind. I saw on p. 58 of the Printer's Users' Manual instructions on how to assign or change the system password using the Embedded Web Server. It said to copy the Printer's IP address into a web browser and press return to access the HP Embedded Web Server. When I tried to do that my antivirus blocked me, saying the site was unsafe. Do you know if I can safely override my antivirus? (It was pretty insistent, blocking me several times after I told it I knew of the "risks").

Yes you can safely override that warning. It is generated because the printer uses a self signed certificate and the browser is unable to verify the validity. No concern in this case.
