HP 2855e will not print from ipad

I cannot print from an ipad air to the hp 2855e.  I can print from a windows or a macos laptop fine.  I have the hp smart app installed and it sees the printer.  I can select from the smart app to print the wireless status from the ipad and that works.  when I go to any other app (word, chrome, safari, notes, ...) and select print, I see the printer, but when I select to print to it, nothing happens.
