Hello, I do face a strange problem since a while. My printer HP 4502 all in one does not connect anymore with my desktop (windows 11) or other devices in my home-network. The menu of HP smart says: offline .
The onyl way to make him work (online) is to use the panel of the printer, choose "wireless" --> print report --> test report.
This takes a minute or two - but after that my printer is online and can be used.
I'm using this printer for nearly 3 years and it was working properly. Deliberately I changed nothing in the setting.
Who can help me?

Hi @StefSchlue,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like your HP ENVY 4502 e-All-in-One Printer is having trouble maintaining a stable connection to your network, but it temporarily works after printing the wireless test report from the printer's menu. This could be due to several factors affecting its connectivity.
Here are some troubleshooting steps to resolve the issue.
Restart your devices:
- Power off your printer, router, and desktop computer.
- Wait for about 30 seconds, then power them back on. This can help reset any network issues.
Check your network settings:
- Ensure your printer is connected to the correct Wi-Fi network. If you're using a dual-band router (2.4GHz and 5GHz bands), make sure the printer is connected to the 2.4GHz band, as many older printers have trouble connecting to 5GHz networks.
- If needed, reconnect the printer to your Wi-Fi network by navigating to the Wireless settings on the printer's control panel.
Update or reinstall the printer driver:
- Go to Settings > Devices > Printers & Scanners on your desktop.
- Right-click on your HP ENVY 4502 printer and select Remove Device.
- Download and install the latest drivers from the HP Support website for your printer model.
- After installation, try adding the printer again by going to Settings > Devices > Printers & Scanners and clicking Add a printer or scanner.
Reconfigure the HP Smart app:
- Open the HP Smart app and ensure it recognizes your printer. If it doesn’t, remove the printer from the app and re-add it.
- Ensure the app is up to date by checking for any updates in the Microsoft Store.
Check for firmware updates:
- Sometimes a printer's firmware might need an update to fix network issues. You can check for updates from the printer's control panel or using the HP Smart app.
Check for interference or weak Wi-Fi signal:
- Make sure your printer is within a good range of your router. If the signal is weak, try moving the printer closer to the router or using a Wi-Fi range extender.
Set a static IP for the printer:
- In your router settings, you can assign a static IP address to your printer. This ensures that your printer always uses the same IP address, which might help maintain a stable connection.
Disable and re-enable the printer's wireless connection:
- On the printer's control panel, disable the wireless connection and then re-enable it. This can sometimes help re-establish a stable connection.
After trying these steps, check if the printer remains online and connected to your network without needing to print the test report each time.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

Hello, thx for your reply and sorry for late feedback. Reason: I changed nothing and printer was Online after starting the laptop. So possibly some internal updates may have helped - but now it's on "offline" and I've to run the procedure via the printers menu again and again. This is not helpful as I have to print 2 pages for nothing.
Printer has a static IP-Address in the routers configuration. Every single action initiated on the laptop is not running, because the printer cannort be found (it's offline).
Any other ideas?
regards Stefan

Hey @StefSchlue, Welcome to HP Support Community,
Thank you so much for posting your query! My colleague is currently out, but don't worry – I’ll be taking over and making sure we get this sorted for you.
I’m here to help, and together, we’ll work through this!
Please follow these troubleshooting steps:
Check Static IP Configuration
- Ensure that the static IP address assigned to the printer is not conflicting with other devices on your network. Sometimes, IP conflicts can cause the printer to go offline.
- Log into your router’s settings and check if any other device is using the same IP address as your printer.
- If necessary, reassign a new static IP to your printer (make sure it's outside the DHCP range to avoid conflicts).
Ping Test
- Try to ping the printer from your laptop or desktop to check if the device can be reached on the network.
- Open the Command Prompt (press Win + R, type cmd, and hit Enter).
- Type ping <printer_ip_address> and press Enter (replace <printer_ip_address> with the static IP you've assigned to the printer).
- If the printer doesn't respond, there may be an issue with the network connection, or the printer’s network settings.
- If the ping succeeds, it shows that the printer is connected to the network.
Reset Printer Network Settings
- Sometimes the network settings on the printer may be corrupted, which causes issues with the connection.
- On the printer’s control panel, go to the Wireless Settings and look for the option to Restore Network Defaults or Reset Network Settings.
- After resetting, reconnect the printer to the Wi-Fi network by following the usual process.
Check Printer's Firmware Version
- It’s possible that the printer’s firmware may be outdated, causing connectivity issues.
- Use the HP Smart app or printer’s control panel to check if there are any firmware updates available.
- If an update is available, apply it and test if the printer works properly.
Reinstall Printer on Laptop/PC
- Uninstall the printer from your laptop/PC again and try to reinstall it with the latest drivers from the official HP website.
- Sometimes the printer’s software may need to be reinstalled to establish a new connection after a network or software update.
- After reinstalling, go to Settings > Devices > Printers & Scanners and add the printer manually again.

Disable Energy Saving/Power Settings
- Some printers have power-saving modes that can cause them to go offline after a period of inactivity.
- Check the printer’s settings and ensure that Energy Saving or Sleep Mode is not causing it to disconnect from the network.
- If such an option exists, disable it or increase the inactivity time before the printer enters power-saving mode.
Check for Network Interference
- If you have a lot of devices connected to your Wi-Fi, it could cause interference or issues with the printer’s connection.
- Try temporarily disconnecting some non-essential devices and check if the printer stays online.
- Additionally, ensure that your printer is not too far from the router. If it's located at a distance, try moving it closer to improve the connection.
Router Settings:
- WPA3 Encryption: If your router is set to use WPA3 encryption, it may cause compatibility issues with older devices like your printer. Try switching to WPA2 encryption in your router's settings and check if this resolves the issue.
- Multicast/Broadcast Traffic: Some routers have settings that affect how multicast or broadcast traffic is handled, which can impact printer connectivity. Look for any settings related to IGMP snooping or Multicast Filtering in the router settings and disable them if necessary.
Check for Background Software Conflicts
- Ensure that no firewall, antivirus, or network-related software on your laptop or desktop is blocking the printer from connecting.
- Try temporarily disabling your antivirus or firewall and check if the printer can be detected.
- Also, verify that your computer is on the same network as the printer.
HP Print and Scan Doctor Tool
- HP offers a tool called HP Print and Scan Doctor that can diagnose and fix many common printer issues.
- Download it from the official HP website and run the tool to detect and resolve network-related issues automatically.
I truly hope these steps help get things back on track. If you have any questions or need any further clarification, just let me know – I’m happy to guide you through it and make sure everything works perfectly.
Take care, and I hope you have an amazing day ahead! 😊
