HP OfficeJet 4650 All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have a strange problem concerning my HP 4650 printer. Last week I switched Internet providers from Spectrum to Frontier. I installed all my devices on the new network, including the 4650 printer. It works fine from my laptop. On the wireless display it shows as connected to my Frontier home network, but the IP address is different from the IP address shown on my laptop for the printer. Also HP Print and Scan Doctor cannot connect to the printer. I've restarted the Router and the printer, but nothing changes. HP Smart sees the printer as connected, gives me ink levels, etc. When using the Doctor SW if I enter the IP address shown on the printer display it tells me that's either an incorrect IP address or it's connected to a different network. But it's connected to my home network for sure. Therefore, I can't use Print and Scan Doctor to help when I incur a problem. Can someone help me sort this out so I can get Print and Scan Doctor working as it should..

Thanks

Ken

Hi @Shade2019,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you are facing an issue with your HP OfficeJet 4650 is connected to your new Frontier network, but it appears that there may be a conflict between the printer’s IP address and what your laptop recognizes. Here are some troubleshooting steps to fix the issue and get HP Print and Scan Doctor working properly:

1. Check Your Printer's IP Address & Network Details

  • On the printer control panel, print a Network Configuration Page:
    • Go to SetupNetwork SetupPrint Network Configuration Page.
  • Look at the IPv4 Address listed.

2. Compare Printer's IP Address to Your Laptop’s Network

  • On your laptop, open Command Prompt (Win + R, type cmd, press Enter).
  • Type: ipconfig
    • Find your Default Gateway (e.g., 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1).
    • Compare it to the printer's IP address.
    • If your printer’s IP address does not match the same network range as your laptop, then your printer is on a different subnet.

3. Set a Static IP Address for Your Printer

If the IP is mismatched, you need to assign a static IP:

  • Open a web browser on your laptop.
  • Type the printer’s current IP address (from the configuration page) into the address bar and press Enter.
  • Go to Network SettingsWirelessIP Address Configuration.
  • Change IP settings from Automatic (DHCP) to Manual.
  • Assign an IP in the same range as your router (e.g., if your router’s IP is 192.168.1.1, set the printer’s IP to 192.168.1.100).

4. Re-add the Printer Using the Correct IP Address

  • Open Control PanelDevices and Printers.
  • Remove the current printer entry.
  • Click Add a printerThe printer that I want isn’t listed.
  • Select Add a printer using a TCP/IP address and enter the static IP address you just set.

5. Restart HP Print and Scan Doctor HP Print and Scan Doctor

  • Open HP Print and Scan Doctor again and manually enter the new IP.
  • If the issue persists, reset your router and re-add the printer.

6. Check for Dual Band WiFi Issues

  • If your router has both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz WiFi bands, make sure your printer and laptop are on the same band (printers often only support 2.4 GHz).

After making these changes, HP Print and Scan Doctor should be able to detect your printer correctly. Let me know if the issue persists

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Thanks for your response, Gaya. My new router is a dual band, therefore the printer is using the 2.4 band, and I guess that's why I have a different IP address. Keep in mind I can print fine from my laptop, that's not the problem. It does give me a different IP address, but I guess it automatically adjusts to find the printer, whereas, Print and Scan Doctor can't seem to do that.

HP Smart does do the conversion, when I used the SW initially it could not find the printer, but when I entered the IP address shown on the printer, it automatically made that connection, and it found the printer and gave me information on the ink levels, etc.

I don't want to have to modify data in the router and by accident create more problems. It's obvious that the problem is with Print and Scan Doctor SW as it doesn't do what HP Smart does and doesn't have the capability to find the printer via the IP address shown on the printer, and that's a problem that the folks at HP need to solve. What you suggest is a workaround for that problem.

Give me your thoughts on that, possibly you can make the folks at HP aware that there is a problem with dual-band routers that needs to be fixed,

Thanks

Gaya:  I've checked data from the 4650 HP Network Configuration and the IPv4 address: 192.168.254.18.  It's on Channel 6.

My Lenovo laptop IPv4 is:192.168. 254.11, It's running 2.4GHZ and uses Channel 6. The laptop location is: 192.168.223.1

If you need it I can scan and send you the Network Configuration data for both my laptop and the printer. Since the printer does work ok with my laptop, and they are both on the same channel it appears to me that the problem I;m having is caused by the Print and Scan Doctor not being able to do what HP Smart does and recognize the printer on the network.

Since it does work fine with my laptop I don't want to screw things up by making changes to the configuration.

Thanks for the help

Gaya:  One more item: I checked my laptop's Default Gateway:  192.168.254.354  and the Printer's Default Gateway: 192.168.254.254

Print and scan Doctor sees the 4650 as : 192.168.223.1 and that matches the location for my laptop

Hope this helps to solve this.
