HP Officejet Pro 8600 e-All-in-One Printer - N911a

I cannot get the IP address on the printer to be the same as my network. I got an error message saying that the printer's IP address is TEMPORARY.  I tried to key in the IP address of the network but that didn't help.  I have restarted the router, the printer, and the laptop multiple times, and followed the HP Smart directions, but it still can't connect the printer.  I don't know what else to do.  the Wireless Network Test results say NO PROBLEMS FOUND.  The printer status report says under Connectivity Settings that the Network Status is Ready.

@Roberta1980,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like your HP Officejet Pro 8600 is connected to WiFi but isn't properly obtaining a permanent IP address. The "TEMPORARY" IP message usually means it's using an APIPA address (169.254.x.x) or the router hasn't assigned it a valid IP. Let's try these steps to resolve the issue.

Assign a Static IP to the Printer

Since manually entering the IP didn’t work, try setting a Static IP via the printer’s settings:

Find Your Router’s IP Range:

  • On your computer, open the Command Prompt (Windows) or Terminal (Mac).
  • Type: ipconfig (Windows) or ifconfig (Mac/Linux).
  • Look for Default Gateway (e.g., 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1).

Set a Static IP on the Printer:

  • On the printer’s control panel, go to Setup > Network Setup > Advanced Settings.
  • Find IP Address Configuration and change it from Automatic (DHCP) to Manual or Static.
  • Enter an IP address similar to your network (e.g., if your router is 192.168.1.1, use 192.168.1.100).
  • Set Subnet Mask to 255.255.255.0.
  • Set Default Gateway to your router’s IP address.
  • Set DNS Server to 8.8.8.8 (Google DNS) or your router’s IP.

Apply and Restart both the printer and router.

Reserve the Printer’s IP Address in the Router

If the issue persists, check if the router is changing the printer’s IP address:

  1. Log into your router’s settings (use its IP address in a web browser).
  2. Look for DHCP or Address Reservation settings.
  3. Find the printer in the Connected Devices list and assign it a static IP.
  4. Save changes and restart the router.

Reset the Printer’s Network Settings & Reconnect

If nothing works, try resetting the network settings:

  1. On the printer’s control panel, go to Setup > Network Settings > Restore Network Defaults.
  2. Reconnect to WiFi using Setup Wizard and verify the new IP address.

Use HP Print and Scan Doctor (Windows Only)

If you're on Windows, download HP Print and Scan Doctor here. Run it and let it diagnose & fix the issue.

Test Connection Using a Wired Connection

If WiFi keeps failing, try connecting the printer with an Ethernet cable to the router to check if it gets a proper IP.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
