  1. Download Unsuccessful. The printer update could not be downloaded. I performed retry, watched download. It appeared to be 100% . But error message came up again.

Mine has same problem, but mine stays at zero, Using ethernet or WiFi, same result.  Product web page does not list any firmware to download. HELP HP!  I have HP OfficeJet Pro 9010

This also started happening on my OfficeJet Pro 9018 yesterday. A couple times I've seen it count up to 100% and then say it failed to download.  Usually it just sits there at "00%" if I have it retry. Even if I cancel, a short time later the printer tries again to update and fails.  Which is annoying because it sits there at the failed message and has to be manually cancelled to restart the printer before I can use it at all. Tried unplugging and plugging AC from the printer just to make sure it really fully reset, but didn't help. Also tried forcing the update through the HP Smart app on my computer, but that didn't help either.  Looks like it just tells the printer to try a normal update instead of actually helping in the download/update.

his just happened to my 9010 today. It is as if the printer is stuck in a loop. If I hit retry it does the same thing. If I hit ok the screen comes back the printer could not update. Just stuck!!! UGH 😞

My Officejet 9018 just started doing this today.  It is in a loop and cannot get out of it.  It stays at 0% downloading until you cancel but it restarts and goes right back into the downloading part.  This is directly on the printer LCD.  Trying to run the firmware update for the printer web page is not possible.

So this printer is completely unusable until HP can fix the issue.  Since many are reporting the same problem it must be on HP's end.

I got it to try a firmware update from the printer web page.  It checks for updates and now there is a message saying:

Downloading Updates

Completed 0%

SO it looks like both the printer and the web app are both looking for a firmware file that cannot be downloaded.

Because I am enrolled in HP Instant Ink it appears that the ability to stop these automated firmware updates has been greyed out.  I guess HP doesn't want you to manually install some older firmware that does not enforce HP only cartriges or something.  This printer has been enrollled in HP Instant ink from the start and has only used HP Ink from that program.

It is booted up now and maybe it will print but as soon as it goes to auto update the firmware again it will be down until it is rebooted.

The current firmware version is MANHTNPP1N002.2313A.00

Tomalv...get rid of instant ink. I used it a couple of years ago and had nothing but problems with it. This firmware problem is not because of instant ink HP is having some other kind of issue for so many of us to just start having this problem. UGH

I tried the chat bot but it was not helpful.  It recommended a chat with a real person which I did but he said that the problem I was repointing was not something that he could address and said to call an 800 number (which I am not allowed to post here for some reason) which I did and asked for HP printer support.  I eventually got connected to sales and they told me that support had a high volume of calls right now (which I guess is why the call failed over to them?) and that I should call back later.

I wonder if the high volume of calls is about firmware update failures?  So far the Instant ink has been OK for me.

Here's my support story. I tried chatting with the Instant Ink person, they sent me to Tech support chat. I explained the problem I was having. Now my printer is out of warranty, so they probably could have let me go, but attempted to help me, although I am an Instant Ink subscriber! Anyway, we did the unplug printer, attempted to update the firmware through the web page.  No luck.   If you cancel the update, the printer will work correctly for a time.

One thing I did learn, was I had the latest firmware, but not the latest. Their words not mine.  I suspect file on the server is corrupted or firmware was for another printer and misnamed on the server, and the printer rejects it before it does the actual update.

Hopefully enough people will complain, and they will fix it on their side. Maybe we'd have more leverage if printer was still in warranty.  As someone said, the only thing we can possibly do is to cancel Instant Ink and then turn off updates. Printer and Ink have worked well till now, but this is a pretty bad problem, consumers having to intervene.
