Tech support should have helped you even though you are out of warranty as the problem is on their end. You are helping HP by pointing out the issue.

HP is aware of the problem because I spoke with their tech this morning. They said it was the 9000 series. He had me take my printer back to factory reset and now I have to try and reset everything again. What a pain!!! 😞

Download Unsuccessful - Then it states:

"The printer update could not be downloaded.

Touch “Retry” to start the download again.

Touch “OK” to end."

When I touch “Retry” I get a circle  with the words “Downloading 0.0%” below it.

When nothing happens I “cancel” download and get a “checking the printer” message.

If I touch “OK”… it goes to normal operation then to “Downloading 100%” then immediately

Goes back to “Download Unsuccessful” again…. it is in an unending loop that won't correct.

Did the reset to factory help?

I’m having the same problem with my OfficeJet Pro 9018

No, I can not get my printer to connect to WIFI...I am going to be calling tech today. This is really a pain and HP is aware of the problem...don't know if they have fixed it yet. One thing yesterday is when I set it to factory reset the tech on the phone said set it for NO updates. I would suggest you not set to factory reset yet and see if they can fix the problem or you will have to set up everything again, emails on your scanner, etc...Good luck

I found a reply somewhere on this site that seems to solve the problem.

Use the HP Smart App on your computer.

From  main menu select Printer Settings then

Advanced Settings, then

Settings, then

Security, then

Administrator Settings.

Uncheck the box marked "All Firmware Updates" (near the bottom of list) and then

Click Apply.

No further problems ... Not sure who originally wrote this, but hats off to them....!

Last night, I discovered the same problem with BOTH of our OfficeJet Pro 9018's. Did a "cold reset" on the upstairs unit, accepted the "auto update" option during the setup process, but the printer eventually started back with "The printer update could not be downloaded." thing again.  Then tried the "Restore factory defaults" option and I DID NOT choose the "auto update" option during the setup...chose to be "Notified" of new updates.  Re-checked the settings from the front panel and I was set to be "Notified".  Thought I'd fixed it.  Wrong.  Woke up this morning to "The printer update could not be downloaded." again.  Checked the settings from the front panel and the update function had rolled back over to the "auto update" option!  How in the world?  Anyway, HP...please figure out what is going on!  Note:  Over the course of the evening, I had downloaded and updated the upstairs printer...and I was 100% updated with NO updates required.

Saw your post shortly after I posted RE our problem (within minutes!).  I've tried it and...fingers crossed.  Thank you!

Thanks, it seems to have worked for me... I just did it this morning... I can't take credit for the solution, but I just thought it needed to be shared here. I trust it works for you too.
