HP App won't find printer

I can print to my HP7740 directly from my laptop through WiFi, but the HP App will not find the printer.

Both printer and device (computer, tablet, phone) must be on the same network.

In general, applications that need to "find" a device on the network might do better when that device is connected to the same network as your device (computer, tablet, phone) using an assigned IP address.   Assign the printer's static / manual IP address on both the printer and your router.

If you are using a supported version of Windows, you may (should) install the full driver.  The full driver includes HP Scan.  Windows also supports (for example) a nice built-in scan application -- Windows Scan

Ask if you need additional information for the full driver, scan software, or scan apps.

Next,

If the printer has never been successfully added to the HP Application, and in addition to using an assigned IP address for the printer, check that other prerequisites are in place.

Ensure that Network and Sharing are enabled.

• Settings > Network & internet > Advanced Network Settings > Advanced sharing settings
• Private Network > Network discovery = ON
• Checked “Set up network connected devices automatically”

Next,

Neither the older HP Smart application nor its replacement app, HP, are entirely suitable for a USB-only setup.

Should it work at all, many of the features of the app will be missing or curtailed.
