OfficeJet Pro 9010

Suddenly this morning I'm seeing this pattern of error logs repeating every 5 minutes. The IP address indicated is the IP of the 9010 printer on my wireless network. I've read elsewhere that it might be related to the wired interface incorrectly attempting to establish DCHP when no ethernet is even connected, so just to be sure, I've disabled that interface too and only left the wireless ones enabled. But still it repeats endlessly. I think this morning around the same time when this started (10am CT) was when I also saw the printer indicated on the display that it had an update error of some kind (I'm guessing the auto firmware update) when I was investigating why it wasn't printing the materials I printed just beforehand. I dismissed that error and then it seemed to reboot and let me print just fine. I have checked the firmware the printer reports (MANHTNPP1N001.2010B.00 build date 2020-03-05) appears to be the latest build per HP's firmware details for this printer, so I am not sure what the update error was about. My SNMP logs aren't going back beyond this morning for some reason (unrelated to this) so I can't see much beyond what I'm saying here unfortunately. Any ideas on what this error is and how to get it to stop?

I tried rebooting it via the option in the web interface. After it finishes rebooting, this is what it looks like in the logs. Same pattern as before but a few earlier errors / warnings may be a clue. After this it just keeps repeating the same pattern as above.

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

I reviewed your post and I understand that you are seeing an error in the SNMP logs.

Don’t worry, I assure you I will try my best to get this sorted.

I recommend you turn off the auto update feature on the printer and check if it helps.

Maybe the printer is trying to connect to the HP server to download the firmware and it is unable to connect as the printer is already updated to date.

Let me know how it goes and you have a great day!

P.S: Welcome to the HP Support Community 😊

If you wish to show appreciation for my efforts, mark my post as Accept as Solution. Your feedback counts!

Cheers!

If that were the reason for this problem, shouldn't someone at HP be investigating why the printer is unable to contact its firmware site? That would be a really big problem if it were the issue.

I've tried to disable the firmware updates by going to the printer's IP address in a browser, and by using the HP Smart app, but when I go to that page for printer firmware, the page shows this fun new error after it tries to load that frame for a few seconds:

broken-hpbroken-hp

There is obviously something wrong with this firmware and not my network since my computer is able to talk to the printer enough to bring up that page, but it's just not loading the firmware update option properly now. There are errors on the browser's console tab too, so it's definitely an HP problem of some kind.

When I try to disable the firmware update via the control panel on the device, the device tells me that feature is locked with text "This feature has been locked by the person who set up the printer." That person would be me and I certainly didn't do anything like that.

Does HP even allow firmware to not be automatically updated anymore? I thought I remembered this being mandatory now on this printer but maybe I imagined that.

I can't get this forum site to accept an image in the new post. Keeps eating the new image. The text on the page that I'm trying to show you in the image just says "Network connection error. Check network and try again" Googling for this term I see lots of hits with HP printers, no surprise.

I manually powered off the printer using the power button, then powered it back on. I still get the same notice when I try to disable the firmware via the control panel on the device, but after the reboot when I go back to that same firmware setting via the browser interface, I can confirm that I am not allowed to disable the automatic firmware updates, as that whole section is grayed out and the first option is the one that is selected, indicating the automated firmware updates are required.

Try assigning a Manual IP Address and let me know if that helps

1) Obtain the IP address of the printer – You can touch the “wireless” icon on the printer control panel to obtain the IP address.
2) Type the IP address on your web browser to obtain the printer EWS page on your computer.
3) Go to "Network" tab - General - Select "Network protocols" - Select "Enable IPv4 only" (or similar) - Apply the settings.
4) Go to the “Network” tab – Click on “Wireless (802.11) – Then click on “Network address (IPv4)
5) Click Manual IP
6) If you see a Suggest a Manual IP Address button, click Manual IP address, and the Manual IP addresses are automatically filled out for you.
7) If your page does not have a button to suggest a manual IP address, type the IP address, subnet mask, and default gateway using the numbers shown in the report you printed.

None of the following has helped:

- assign manual IP address to wireless interface

- disable wired interface

- force network protocols supported to be "Enable IPv4 only"

- disable Wi-Fi Direct

- disable Bluetooth Low Energy

- disable IPP, IPPS, and Airprint

- verified Google Cloud Print is disabled

- disable WINS

- disable HP ePrint

- disable HP Print Apps

- change Energy Save Mode to be set to "After 15 minutes"

- rebooted printer multiple times since the changes above put into place

Still I get this same pattern showing up every 5 minutes:

2020-09-16 20:30:47 Error 192.168.1.10 user dhcp_server dsrv: _dhcp_server_addr_mgmt_janitor_cb | wrote correct number of bytes: 4
2020-09-16 20:30:47 Error 192.168.1.10 user dhcp_server dsrv: _dhcp_server_addr_mgmt_janitor_cb fired

There is no reason for DHCP to be operating at all at this point, much less for it to be reporting an Error to my logs. Why is this dhcp_server failing to stop executing even after disabling every possible reason for it to be enabled?

Worse even than that, several times a day I'm seeing this pattern:

2020-09-16 02:16:38 Warning 192.168.1.10 user kernel [86464.851901] wlan: SCAN COMPLETED: scanned AP count=12
2020-09-16 02:16:33 Alert 192.168.1.10 user kernel [86459.676884] wlan: wlan0 START SCAN

An "ALERT" in syslog is the second highest priority possible meaning that "Action must be taken immediately " because something very important and very wrong has taken place. As a result, my syslog server sends immediate alerts to my mobile device to take action. But there is nothing to act on because the text that goes with this seems to be just saying the printer has decided to do a new WiFi scan for some reason. If you're going to use ALERT, it's your responsibility to indicate what action is required. I suspect either there really is a serious problem and the developer didn't bother to indicate what that problem is when creating this alert message, or there isn't any real problem and the developer selected the wrong severity level. Either way, this must be corrected too.

The support system says my product is out of warranty as of 2 weeks ago and provides no options for HP to contact me or for me to contact HP other than through this community forum. What am I supposed to do to report this defect to HP?
