HP DeskJet 4200e loses wifi when Spectrum Voice connects. The first week everything was fine but, then I noticed that when I turn my modem/router back on in the morning the wifi light comes on the router and my printer wifi turns to steady blue. Then when the voice (telephone) connects and lights up the printer wifi goes back to flashing.  Case number  Edited

Hi @johnwd98,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

Your HP DeskJet 4200e connects to Wi‑Fi, and the blue light turns solid. But the moment Spectrum Voice (phone line) initializes on the modem, the printer’s Wi‑Fi drops and goes back to flashing. You’ve already done all the right “basic” steps, so now we will go deeper, using correct HP‑supported wireless troubleshooting.

Let’s Fix This Gently, Step by Step

Step 1: Put Printer Back Into Clean Setup Mode

We want to remove the old Wi‑Fi profile completely.

On your DeskJet 4200e:

  1. Press and hold Wireless Button + Cancel (X) together for 5 seconds
  2. Wait until the blue Wi‑Fi light blinks

This restores Wi‑Fi setup mode exactly as HP describes.

Step 2: Reconnect Through the HP App (Correct Method)

On your phone: HP App – For HP Printers, Laptops, and Tech Accessories | HP® Official Site

  1. Open the HP App
  2. Tap Set Up a New Printer
  3. Select HP DeskJet 4200e Series – Setup
  4. Follow prompts
  5. Choose your home Wi‑Fi
  6. Enter password
  7. Wait until the blue Wi‑Fi light goes solid

This ensures the printer gets a fresh connection.

Step 3: Adjust Spectrum Router Settings (This is the REAL fix)

Spectrum Voice gateways change radio configuration when telephony activates.
Your printer disconnects because of:

  • band steering
  • WPA3 security
  • auto‑channel switching
  • The telephony boot is causing a Wi‑Fi restart

To stabilize the connection:

1. Separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Networks

Name them differently:

  • HomeWiFi_2.4
  • HomeWiFi_5G

Your DeskJet must use HomeWiFi_2.4.

2. Disable Band Steering / Smart Connect

HP printers do not tolerate automatic band switching.
This is also verified in broader Wi‑Fi troubleshooting for HP models.

3. Set Security to WPA2 Only (not WPA3 or mixed mode)

Most HP models require WPA2 authentication to connect reliably, a requirement noted in macOS Tahoe and HP connectivity troubleshooting.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!

My Spectrum WiFi 6 (SAX1X1K) Router does not have the capability to Disable Band Steering / Smart Connect or Set Security to WPA2 Only (not WPA3 or mixed mode).

HP Recommended

Hi @johnwd98,

We understand that your router does not allow disabling Band Steering / Smart Connect or switching to WPA2-only, which can sometimes affect printer connectivity, especially for models like the HP DeskJet 4200e that rely on stable 2.4 GHz communication during setup.

Available options you can try

1. Use a WiFi extender (2.4 GHz)

You may consider using a WiFi extender or repeater that broadcasts a separate 2.4 GHz network.

  • This can help the printer connect more reliably
  • Some extenders allow you to create a dedicated 2.4 GHz SSID

Please note that while this is a commonly used workaround, HP has not specifically tested all extender models, so we cannot guarantee compatibility, but you are welcome to try this option.

2. Use WiFi Direct (recommended alternative)

You can use WiFi Direct, which allows your printer to connect directly to your computer or phone without using your router.

For your HP DeskJet 4200e:

  • Turn ON the printer
  • Enable WiFi Direct (usually via the Information/Resume button or by printing a network info page)
  • On your computer or phone, go to WiFi settings
  • Connect to the printer’s WiFi Direct network (name usually starts with DIRECT-xx-HP)
  • Enter the password shown on the information page

Once connected, you can print and scan without needing your home WiFi.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!

Can the printer connect to more than one device using WiFi Direct?

HP Recommended

Hi @johnwd98,

Thank you for getting back to me and for the clarification.

You are correct, Wi-Fi Direct does allow multiple devices (such as smartphones, tablets, and laptops) to connect to the printer without a router. However, while multiple devices can be connected, the printer can typically process one print job at a time, so simultaneous printing may be limited.

For a smoother experience, especially when multiple users need to print frequently, connecting the printer to a Wi-Fi network/router is still recommended.

Please let me know if you need any assistance with setting that up.

Since my last post, I finally gave up on HP and the "expert" help. I canceled my Instant Ink account and took my 4200e printer back and got a refund.  Since I still wanted a printer that works as it should, (I have another older HP printer that would connect to my network with no problems, but it started printing blank pages and HP could not fix that one either. While trying to get HP to find a fix the warranty ran out and then I would get handed off to a pay in advance "expert"). I hoped that it was only a fluke so I bought the HP 4200e series only to find out that while it printed as it should, it would not consistently connect to my network or not at all. Again, after doing all the research to find any fix that I could find and trying them, I again contacted HP, only out of desperation and again got the same run around and no fix. I'm going to add that some of the so-called fixes sounded suspiciously like the same fixes that AI, word for word suggested to me. I finally gave up and took my printer back. Embarrassingly, I was talked into buying another HP printer, model, Deskjet 2800e series, same problem! No point in contacting HP, they can't fix it! I was complaining to a friend, and he said they had already returned 2 printers, and the third one had the same problem, so they gave up and started going elsewhere to pay for their printing needs. In the meantime, being as stubborn as I am I decided to go over everything that I had learned that didn't work. I decided to try to reconnect my new printer with the My Spectrum app on my phone, Spectrum is my IP. I started by shutting of WiFi on my printer, I then went to the My Spectrum app> Manage Internet/WiFi> Set Up Smart Device on 2.4 GHz>Switch to 2.4 GHz. Then back to the printer and push the WiFi button to turn WiFi back on, it did eventually connect. The first time I did this my printer reconnected every morning for 4-5 days, just when I thought I found the problem the printer failed to connect this morning. I went through the same steps as above and it reconnected, for how long and why is going to be another HP mystery that most likely will never be resolved. I'm seriously considering returning this printer and buy a different brand (I already regret that I didn't do this the last time) and again cancelling Instant Ink. I want to add that the HP expert advice I was given to purchase more devices that cost more than the printer and that the devices were untested by HP and may not work, was so unbelievably ridiculous! Sorry that this post is such a long read but it is only a small fraction of the time spent, actually I should say time wasted on multiple HP printers and with HP "experts"!

Hi @johnwd98,

Thank you for taking the time to share all of this. I completely understand why you’d feel frustrated after going through multiple printers and not getting a consistent resolution. That’s not the experience we want you to have, and I’m really sorry it’s been this difficult.

From what you described, your testing actually points to something very specific and important: you were able to get the printer to connect when forcing the network to 2.4 GHz through the Spectrum app. That tells us the printer itself is functioning, but the connection is being affected by how the network is handling dual-band (2.4 GHz / 5 GHz) or band steering.

Many home networks (including Spectrum routers) automatically switch devices between bands. HP DeskJet and ENVY printers in this range are designed to work on 2.4 GHz only, and when the router moves or manages the connection dynamically, the printer can appear to “drop” or fail to reconnect, even though nothing is actually wrong with the printer hardware.

What you’ve already done (and did right)

  • Forcing 2.4 GHz → printer connects
  • Repeating the steps → connection returns
  • Works for a few days → then drops again

That pattern strongly suggests a network-level behavior, not a defective printer.

What we recommend (more stable approach)

Instead of switching each time manually, try one of these more permanent options:

Option 1: Separate Wi-Fi bands (best solution)

If your router allows it:

  • Split your network into two names (SSIDs), for example:
    • HomeWiFi_2.4
    • HomeWiFi_5G
  • Connect the printer only to 2.4 GHz
  • Keep your phone/computer on either network

Option 2: Disable band steering (if available)

In the Spectrum router/app settings:

  • Turn off Smart Connect / Band Steering
  • This prevents the router from shifting devices between bands

Option 3: Assign a reserved IP address

  • In your router settings, reserve an IP for the printer
  • This helps prevent connection drops after idle periods or overnight

A quick note on your experience

You’ve clearly put in a lot of effort trying to resolve this, and your troubleshooting steps were absolutely valid. I understand your concern about being guided toward additional purchases, which shouldn’t feel like the only path forward.

If you decide to keep the printer

Based on what you found, I’m confident this can be stabilized with the router-side changes above.

Take care and have an amazing day!

Are you kidding me! This is what makes HP help SO frustrating. I have already explained to you that my model of Spectrum Router does not allow your option 1 or 2, we have already discussed this! Option 3 apparently has been done automatically by my router. This NOT a router problem, this issue started when HP decided to go to 2.4 GHz on their printers. Since you are repeating yourself, I'll return the favor. As I have already told you my old Envy 6000 series connects every time (at 5GHz) but, again as I already told you that it only prints blank pages, another problem that I have spent hours and hours with HP and no fix. When the warranty ran out, I was then sent to a pay in advance "help site". I'm guessing that 2.4 GHz on the newer HP printers is a cheaper way to build printers, THAT is the real issue here! IT'S HP THAT MADE THIS PROBLEM; this problem did not exist before switching to 2.4GHz!

Hi @johnwd98,

Thank you for taking the time to explain everything again. I do understand how frustrating this has been, especially after the amount of effort you’ve already put in.

I hear your concern clearly, and I’ll make sure your feedback about the 2.4 GHz limitation and overall experience is shared with the relevant team. Feedback like yours is important, and it helps highlight where improvements are needed.

I also understand your point regarding your previous printer connecting on 5 GHz without issues. Just to mention for future reference, when considering a new printer, it can help to check the wireless specifications, specifically whether the model supports 2.4 GHz only or dual-band (2.4 + 5 GHz). This can help avoid compatibility concerns depending on the router setup.

That said, I completely understand your experience here hasn’t been smooth, and I’m really sorry for the inconvenience it has caused.

If you need any assistance in the future, whether it’s choosing a compatible model or troubleshooting, we’re here and happy to help.

Thank you again for your feedback and your time.
