Common problems for Connectivity Issues
We would like to share some of the most frequently asked questions about Printer Wi-Fi, Connectivity Issues and Offline Status. Check out this link: HP printer is offline or unavailable.

for some months I have had a problem with this printer - when turned on the printerscreen is blank and does not respond to sent items.

I have researched so much and tried so many options without success - HP smart tells me the printer is off line - it is connect to my PC via USB cable - this has been replaced - I have deleted the printer and re-installed with software and firmware - still no help - Then last night I played around again disconnection power and USB cables and screen lit up - I printed documents and tested scan option - all successful - Whilst my PC was on - turned of and on the printer many times to make sure it was responding and the screen was correct and not blank - I turned my PC off - This morning - Blank screen again - so back to the beginning of this frustrating issue.

Any advice or assistance would be greatly appreciated - - Edited

Hi @steviepw,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

I completely understand how frustrating this must feel  especially since the printer briefly worked after reconnecting cables, only to go back to the blank screen issue the next morning. Thank you for sharing all the steps you’ve already tried; that helps narrow things down quite a bit.

Here are a few  specific steps you can try:

  1. Hard reset: Disconnect the power cable from the printer while it’s still on, wait at least 60 seconds, then reconnect directly to a wall outlet (avoid surge protectors). This clears residual power and can revive the display.
  2. Check power source: Ensure the outlet is stable and not controlled by a switch or power-saving mode. Try a different outlet if possible.
  3. Firmware recovery: Some HP printers have a hidden recovery mode. If the screen stays blank, pressing and holding the power button for 15–20 seconds while reconnecting the power cable can sometimes trigger a recovery sequence.
  4. USB vs driver issue: Since you mentioned HP Smart shows the printer offline, try installing the printer as a “USB device” via Windows Device Manager to confirm the driver is binding correctly.
  5. Display panel check: If the screen intermittently lights up, it could be a loose internal connection or failing display board. In that case, service may be required.

Also if you could confirm, do you notice if the printer makes startup noises (like the carriage moving) even when the screen is blank? That detail can help us determine whether it’s a display-only issue or a  hardware fault.

You can also find the link here explaining about the  Control panel display is black or blank  - Click here .

I hope this helps.
