Common problems for Connectivity Issues
We would like to share some of the most frequently asked questions about Printer Wi-Fi, Connectivity Issues and Offline Status. Check out this link: HP printer is offline or unavailable.

HP Envy 4500 refuses to connect to my new wireless router because it thinks "MAC filtering" is enabled when I assure you it most certainly is not. I tried using the wireless setup wizard both on the printer and on the computer, and each time it gives me the same error. I am losing my cool with this and I am feeling a date with a baseball bat in its near future. This is the last time any HP hardware enters this house. Somebody wanna come save it?

Welcome to the HP Community Forum.

The following might be useful or "bat fodder" -

Use or ignore as the situation warrants.

"Offline" can be the result of a couple of different conditions -

For example,

  • The printer software is corrupted, not installed, or otherwise messed up in the File System.
  • The printer is not connecting to your network -- the printer software (if it is installed) might be OK but the printer cannot get to the point where printer software is in play.

============================================================

Note:

The "Mac Filtering" error is one of a few messages the code knows how to generate.

The "MAC" address is a guess based on whatever path led the diagnostics to that point.

Ignore the message as useless in the context of what you are doing.

Consider:  Restart everything, including the router that controls your network

The following is directed at the printer connection to the router and your network.

The connection is not dependent on the Operating System (not provided) and is a primary "first step" in making sure everything else can be made to work as expected.

Start...

If you are running a Dual Band Network there are several places the dual frequency setup can entangle your older printer.

A wireless 802.11b/g/n network that includes a wireless router or access point.
NOTE: The HP ENVY 4500 series only supports connections using 2.4GHz.

Make sure the router is broadcasting on both 5GHz and 2.4GHz.

If the router supports it, create a separate SSID named network for each frequency.

Connect the printer to your SSID network for 2.4GHz.

Depending on your setup, you might be able to use the Embedded Web Server (EWS) to deal with the network setup.

True - the printer has to have a "connection" to the network, even if that connection is not enough to let the printer software communicate.  You don't need printer software to use EWS.

EWS > HP Document / How-to

Use the HP printer Embedded Web Server (EWS)

Open your favorite browser > type / enter Printer IP address into URL / Address bar

Tab Network > Wireless (802.11) > IPv4 Configuration

And – Model Dependent

Tab Network > Wireless (802.11) > Advanced

Example - EWS - Network > Wireless > IPv4
