I'm getting an annoying whirring sound from the HP Envy, like an emergency vehicle in the distance. I see that posts recommed disabling the wireless mode? Really?

Any ideas on a fix?

Hi @NotloB58,

I understand your HP Envy printer is making a constant whirring or siren-like noise, even when it’s not actively printing. Let’s go through a few steps to check what could be causing this.

Identify when the noise occurs
Note whether the sound happens when the printer is idle, waking from sleep, or constantly.
Continuous noise usually points to background maintenance or wireless activity.

Check if the noise stops when Wi-Fi is disabled
Temporarily turn off Wi-Fi on the printer from the control panel.
If the noise stops, the printer is repeatedly trying to communicate or resync online services.

Disable Web Services (not Wi-Fi itself)
Go into the printer’s settings and turn Web Services off.
Web Services can cause frequent background activity that sounds like a distant siren.

Turn off automatic maintenance features
In printer settings or the HP Smart app, look for Auto-clean, Auto-update, or Background maintenance.
Disable these temporarily to see if the noise stops.

Check for pending firmware updates
A partially downloaded or looping update can cause repeated motor activity.
If updates are available, complete them; if stuck, restart the printer and recheck.

Perform a full power reset
With the printer powered on, unplug the power cord from the printer and the wall outlet.
Wait 60 seconds, then plug it directly into a wall outlet and turn it back on.

Remove paper and cartridges briefly (test)
Power off the printer, remove paper and cartridges, then power it on.
If the noise still occurs without cartridges, the issue is internal and not ink-related.

Check printer placement
Make sure the printer is on a solid, level surface.
Vibrations can amplify normal motor sounds into a loud whirring noise.

Re-enable features one at a time
Turn Wi-Fi and Web Services back on individually.
This helps identify exactly which feature triggers the noise.

I hope this helps.
